In Venezuela, all is being ready for the inauguration this Friday 10th, January 10th,
00:05
of President Nicolás Maduro for his third consecutive term.
00:08
For that we are going straight live to Caracas in Venezuela with our correspondent
00:12
Belén de los Santos for all the details of what is happening today on this occasion.
00:20
Hello Luis, exactly we are here in Caracas,
00:24
exactly from the Yaguno Bridge in downtown Caracas.
00:28
And this is very early in the morning, a regular Friday morning,
00:32
but this sector of the city is with high expectations because just a few blocks away
00:38
is going to take place today the presidential inauguration of President Nicolás Maduro,
00:44
who was elected on July 28th, presidential elections.
00:47
And today, January 10th, is the presidential inauguration.
00:51
That means that the third mandate of President Maduro begins officially today,
00:56
as he is swearing in before the National Assembly.
00:59
So, let's recall a little bit how we get to this day.
01:03
So, according to the constitution, the authorities from the National Assembly,
01:07
the new authorities for the new legislative period that were reinstated and reconfirmed
01:13
on Sunday, are taking President Maduro's oath.
01:17
And this is happening as it always happens in the National Assembly,
01:21
that is just a few blocks away.
01:24
So, this is a normal day here in Caracas with all the security measures,
01:29
of course, that mark this important day.
01:32
The streets otherwise are calm.
01:35
We come from a day of demonstrations that was yesterday in Caracas.
01:39
So, Thursday, as you know, as we have been reporting here from Venezuela,
01:45
it was a day of peaceful demonstrations.
01:48
People took to the streets.
01:49
We had reports from all over the city, also from all over the country,
01:54
with people coming out in support of this institutional day.
01:59
One of the most important things to keep in mind is that this swearing-in ceremony,
02:05
this presidential inauguration, is a key step in reaffirming the institutionality
02:12
and just the normal peace of the city, of the country,
02:17
something that has been on the spotlight internationally.
02:21
And this is a very important thing to point out from here.
02:25
That is why we are out on the streets.
02:26
That is why we are reporting.
02:29
Of course, any swearing-in ceremony has a lot of media attention,
02:33
but we know that with Venezuela, that takes a particular twist.
02:37
And it's important to reinstate that here in Caracas,
02:41
we are out and that everything is going according to normal.
02:45
The demonstrations yesterday were massive,
02:48
and what is happening today has to do with the beginning of this
02:52
third six-year mandate for President Nicolás Maduro.
02:56
Also, an important thing to point out is the international presence at this event.
03:02
So, one of the things that President Nicolás Maduro, for the past month,
03:06
since the elections up to this moment,
03:08
has been reinforcing is the idea of making Venezuela
03:13
the epicenter of an international fight against fascism, against the far right.
03:19
Of course, this has been tough months for Venezuela in terms of the media
03:24
and international pressure from the violent actions
03:28
after the presidential elections onward.
03:31
And a way to respond to this international pressure
03:35
has been, on the one hand, and the internal front,
03:38
to go back to the people, to the communes.
03:41
So, reinforcing the popular power here in the country
03:45
with the popular consultations, with the true sense of democracy,
03:49
that is the democracy of the peoples,
03:51
with different political activities that have to do with taking back that power,
03:57
that is really the mandate of the people.
03:59
And also, on an international level,
04:02
just gathering all the international support
04:05
in the face of these far right attempts
04:08
and international pressures from media campaigns, for example.
04:12
And the International Anti-Fascism Congress, for example,
04:17
that have been going on,
04:18
are gathering here today now again for the swearing-in ceremony.
04:23
And that is the International Anti-Fascist Festival that is also going on.
04:28
So, we have activities on the streets.
04:31
Of course, this is very early in the morning,
04:33
but Caracas is expected to have all the people back again on the streets today.
04:38
We have sound checks, we have posts waiting for the people to arrive.
04:42
This is about to be yet another popular party, as it was yesterday as well.
04:48
And the international guests are also here
04:51
to continue their anti-fascist festival.
04:55
So, that is happening here in Caracas.
04:57
We will continue reporting along the day.
05:00
We are here to bring you the latest on Venezuela in this presidential inauguration.
05:04
Luis, I go back to you now.
05:15
Thank you, Belén, for all those details.
05:17
We will stay, of course, in touch to continue following up
05:20
everything that is happening in Venezuela
05:21
on this important day of the inauguration of President Nicolás Maduro.
