But why would a violent criminal risk appearing on national television?
00:04
Hey, hello and welcome to Watch Mojo Español.
00:07
I am G, and today we are going to see several examples of known murderers that appeared in television contests.
00:13
So I truly believe almost every place that we live my dad killed someone.
00:18
François Verod, in 2019, a respectable-looking man appeared in the contest
00:23
everyone wants to take his place.
00:25
With his suit, beard and glasses, he looked well-dressed and, in a touch of irony,
00:30
he presented himself as a guard of the community,
00:33
speaking of his passage through the Republican Guard and the National Police.
00:37
It is ironic because Verod had murdered nothing less than three people.
00:42
His crime streak dates back to 1986, when he killed a girl named Cecile Block,
00:48
when he was going to school.
00:50
Witnesses discovered a man covered in acne scars,
00:54
which gave rise to the nickname of Verod, Lurele, which means the man with bite marks.
00:59
Eleven months later, he murdered two other people,
01:03
and investigators discovered that he had burned them with cigarettes before doing so.
01:07
Although the official count of corpses is three,
01:10
investigators believe that he probably murdered nine.
01:14
The police knew that the suspect was a law enforcement officer,
01:17
and in 2021, a judge ordered that all police officers working in the area at the time of the murders
01:23
undergo a DNA test.
01:25
Verod took his own life after receiving the citation,
01:28
and confessed in a note that he had committed unforgivable acts.
01:41
Jeopardy is an American institution,
01:43
and in 1989 it received a murderer named Paul Curry,
01:47
who appeared in three episodes in March,
01:49
and earned a combined total of $24,101,
01:53
more or less the equivalent of $63,000 today.
01:56
Three years later, he married his partner, Linda Kincaid,
01:59
but not long before cracks began to appear in their marriage.
02:04
Curry began to control the couple's finances,
02:06
and demanded that she hire a $1 million life insurance.
02:18
And once when she was in the hospital for a disease,
02:21
the nurses found a small hole in an intravenous bag,
02:25
which indicated that she had been manipulated.
02:27
Finally, Kincaid died under mysterious circumstances in June 1994,
02:32
at the age of 49.
02:42
The autopsy revealed that she had a large amount of Ambien and nicotine,
02:46
in her body, and the pathologist observed a small stabbing wound behind the ear.
02:51
Despite the suspicions of her friends and family,
02:54
Curry got rid of everything and moved to Kansas.
03:07
But then he was arrested in 2010,
03:09
when the investigators had finally built a solid case against him.
03:13
He was found guilty of poisoning his ex-wife with a deadly dose of nicotine
03:18
and sentenced to life in prison.
03:33
Some may have heard of the murders on the day of the final trial of Valo D'Abel,
03:38
in which four people died.
03:40
The authors were Lori Valo and Chad D'Abel.
03:42
But let's go back to 2004, when she appeared in Wheel of Fortune.
03:56
At that time she worked as a stylist in Austin, Texas,
03:59
and lived in a large property with her husband Joseph and their two children, Colby and Tylee.
04:05
Valo seemed like a nice woman and nothing looked out of the ordinary.
04:13
Fifteen years later, Tylee appeared dead, probably murdered by her own mother.
04:19
Lori and Joseph divorced in 2005, shortly after her appearance on the show,
04:24
and she ended up meeting a religious author and cult leader named Chad D'Abel.
04:29
Soon they both fell into a deep religious fanaticism,
04:32
in which he spoke of visions,
04:34
and Valo proclaimed that she was a goddess who would guide the survivors of an imminent apocalypse.
04:40
Finally, they conspired to murder four people.
04:43
Tylee, Charles Valo, Lori's husband,
04:47
her adoptive son JJ,
04:49
and Tammy, D'Abel's wife.
04:57
Prosecutors argue that the murders were committed to cover up their adventure,
05:01
and that the couple used apocalyptic beliefs as an excuse.
05:04
Valo was sentenced to life imprisonment,
05:06
and D'Abel to death.
05:09
There are details of this case that were especially heinous,
05:12
which is why once Chad D'Abel was found guilty on all eight counts against him,
05:16
the prosecution sought the death penalty.
05:18
And the jury agreed.
05:20
Edward Edwards
05:21
My name is Ed Edwards.
05:23
And here is the extraordinary story of Ed Edwards.
05:26
To Tell the Truth was a popular game show in the 60s and 70s,
05:30
and often had the participation of unique characters.
05:33
That's how Edward Edwards got on the show.
05:36
Three people appeared, each of whom claimed to be the same.
05:40
In this case, a former reformed convict named Ed Edwards,
05:44
who once was on the FBI's most wanted list.
05:57
Then four panelists asked the contestants questions
06:00
and tried to guess who was telling the truth.
06:03
Edward Edwards appeared on the show in 1972,
06:06
about 15 years after escaping from prison
06:09
and taking the police to a wild chase while stealing gas.
06:13
He was finally captured in 1962 and spent five years in prison.
06:18
He left, reformed, became a motivational speaker,
06:21
and appeared on the show.
06:23
A happy ending.
06:34
No, it's not true, it's a lie.
06:36
Five years later, in 1977,
06:39
Edwards murdered a young couple from Ohio,
06:42
Billy Lavaco and Judith Straub.
06:44
He committed another double homicide in 1980,
06:47
this time in Wisconsin.
06:49
And in 1996, he murdered his adoptive son, Danny Glockner,
06:53
for insurance money.
06:55
He was finally arrested in 2009 and confessed to the five murders.
06:59
He died in prison at age 77.
07:03
He just did.
07:04
And at that moment, I shot him and killed him.
07:07
What he just did was tell her who I was.
07:10
John Cooper.
07:11
Just three weeks after this episode was filmed,
07:14
Peter and Gwenda Dixon were shot dead on the coastal path.
07:18
In May 1989, a man named John Cooper
07:21
appeared on the British Bullseye contest,
07:24
which combined darts and questions.
07:26
During the program, presenter Jim Bowen
07:29
asked him about an unusual hobby,
07:31
and you can almost see how Cooper's heart stops for a second.
07:35
You've got an unusual hobby, John, haven't you?
07:38
Oh, yes, the scuba diving.
07:40
The scuba diving.
07:41
Apparently, it's the place to do it down there, isn't it?
07:43
That's because he had an unusual hobby.
07:46
And, of course, it wasn't diving.
07:48
In 1985, he had committed several robberies
07:51
and at least two murders.
07:53
Years earlier, he had won £90,000 sterling
07:56
in the contest of a newspaper,
07:58
and a friend claimed that winnings had caused him
08:01
a strong habit of drinking and betting.
08:03
Cooper resorted to robbery once the money began to disappear,
08:07
and on December 22, 1985,
08:10
he murdered Richard and Helen Thomas
08:12
while robbing their farm in Scubaston Park.
08:15
Police believed the robber had targeted the house
08:18
knowing Helen Thomas was home alone,
08:20
but had been disturbed by Richard arriving and panicked.
08:23
On June 29, 1989,
08:26
just a month after his appearance on the show,
08:29
Cooper shot and killed Peter and Gwenda Dixon
08:32
while they were on vacation in Pembrokeshire.
08:34
He took £300 from them.
08:36
He committed even more robberies,
08:38
sexual assaults and possible murders
08:40
before, in 2009,
08:42
thanks to the progress of DNA tests,
08:44
he was finally caught for double homicide.
08:47
He was clinically diagnosed as a psychopath
08:49
and sentenced to life imprisonment.
08:53
It was like a tracing of the artist's impression.
08:56
We're not done yet, but almost.

09:07
Now, let's go to the end.
09:09
Rodney Alcala.
09:10
Between tapes, you might find him skydiving or motorcycling.
09:14
Please welcome Rodney Alcala.
09:16
Rod, welcome.
09:18
The 70s were a different time
09:20
when a convicted sexual offender
09:22
could appear on national TV
09:24
using his real name.
09:26
In 1971, Alcala was included
09:28
in the FBI's most wanted list
09:30
after avoiding detention
09:32
for sexually assaulting Tali Shapiro.
09:34
He had hit her with a steel bar
09:36
and she was in a coma for more than a month.
09:39
Alcala was quickly captured
09:41
and spent several years in prison,
09:43
after which he was released
09:45
and appeared in the popular dating game show
09:47
The Dating Game.
09:49
However, you did leave one remaining.
09:51
This is your date
09:53
and I want to tell you something about him.
09:55
He successfully courted a woman
09:57
named Cheryl Bradshaw,
09:59
who rejected the appointment
10:01
after realizing that she was disgusting
10:03
and was right.
10:05
Alcala was not only a known sexual offender,
10:07
but also a murderer.
10:09
I think at first I was afraid
10:11
that I was going to get lonely
10:13
being away from home,
10:15
but my airline is amazing.
10:18
When Alcala was arrested in 1979,
10:20
he had killed eight people
10:22
in a conclusive manner,
10:24
but possibly up to 130.
10:26
If the figure is true,
10:28
he would make him one of the most prolific serial killers
10:30
in the history of the United States.
10:42
Which of these killers impressed you the most?
