00:00Bangladesh-India relations is a long standing relationship.

00:28We tend to react in very short term, responding to very short term emergency, but we always

00:37need to remember the long term relationship, the long term goals, the shared objectives,

00:43our past linkages, our history.

00:46So Shekhar Sena's extradition right now is very important for the government of Bangladesh,

00:53but this is not the only issue or the only factor that the two countries are working

01:03on.

01:04It is a multifaceted, multidimensional relationship which has been evolving over the last 50 years,

01:1352, 53 years and even before our liberation there was a relationship.

01:19So it is a factor, it is an important issue right now, but I wouldn't say that it's the

01:26only issue between the two countries.

01:30And while it remains critically important for the government of Bangladesh right now,

01:36I don't think it has strained the relationship as you would call it between the two countries.

01:46Regarding the extradition, there are multiple issues like legal issues and also the political

01:54issues.

01:55So it is not very easy.

02:00So how do you think that sometimes there are questions about the fair trial and other issues

02:09also.

02:10And recently latest, what we are hearing that India has allowed for residence permit,

02:20the media reported.

02:22So how do you think the overall issues?

02:26Extradition is an extremely complicated affair, if you look at it this way that even when

02:32two countries have the best interest in their heart, it still takes sometimes years for

02:40the extradition process to be completed.

02:43There are legal issues involved, there are judicial processes involved, there are bureaucratic

02:48processes involved.

02:50So even when two countries are really cooperating and they want to hand over or extradite somebody

02:59who is wanted in the other country, even then I have seen that sometimes it takes years

03:06for the whole process to be completed.

03:08So here where there are many larger political issues involved, there are many issues of

03:18bilateral, bigger bilateral issues at stake, perhaps it will be a much more complicated

03:29process.

03:30If you think of some of the people who have been extradited from Bangladesh to India,

03:35then those processes took considerable time to actually happen.

03:42Even after we signed the extradition treaty, it took quite a few years, both sides willing.

03:48So after signing the extradition treaty, was it make the easier, you just mentioned about

03:56the ULFA leader, you are referring to the ULFA leader Mr. Anup Chettia or other?

04:03Yes, something like that, after signing of the extradition treaty, even then it took

04:08several years for the extradition to actually take place.

04:13So that's what I am trying to say that there are lot of judicial processes involved, lot

04:18of documentation to be gone through, so it's not a very easy process.

04:25How can close neighbours like India and Bangladesh resolve current tensions while maintaining

04:31strong people to people and business ties?

04:34Well, the business ties between Bangladesh and India are actually quite remarkable.

04:41We are, right now India is our largest export destination in Asia and we are importing around

04:5117-18 billion dollars worth of products from India.

04:56In addition to that, that's the formal trade.
