00:00
Now a comprehensive 4-0 win against Radcliffe in the FA Trophy tonight and you're able to
00:06
change the team up and look at other players, are you happy with the night's work?
00:10
Of course, the main priority is to try and get through. We've had a few niggles, we've
00:14
had a few players picking up injuries having trained so a lot of the decisions were made
00:19
formally but in the same vein, it's been a bit unfair on the lads who haven't got much
00:25
game time because I've come in, I've kind of kept with the same team for a few games
00:29
if the results permitted me, that was what I intended to do. So they've had to be patient,
00:33
they've had to train hard, they've had to support their team-mates, they've done that
00:36
so I wanted to show belief in them and give them an opportunity today to go out and do
00:41
well. We've only worked on a different shape for a couple of days so I thought they implemented
00:45
that really, really well and now it gives me and them the belief that they can step
00:50
in and do what the others have been doing so the competition for place is really, really
00:55
strong now.
00:56
You came in and obviously you wanted to hit the ground running with results, which you
01:00
have done and obviously you had that consistency of selection but tonight, as I say, was that
01:04
chance for players and people took it and Jamie Andrews especially and a few others
01:08
out there tonight.
01:09
Yeah, it's not only that, they need fitness as well. We can work them on the training
01:12
field so now I've got players who can come in at any point, they're fit, they've got
01:16
their minutes and there's a good team spirit. The boys, they've been subs in the games up
01:21
until now and they've been really supportive of their team-mates. Then we've put them in
01:25
and the team-mates who were on the bench were really supportive of them and that's what
01:28
we're trying to create because, like I say, football doesn't go in a straight line. You're
01:31
going to have ups and downs and the team spirit, hopefully when we have a bad day at the office,
01:36
will be there and we'll pick ourselves up and we'll go again.
01:39
The guys who obviously have been champing at the bit to get in there got their opportunity
01:43
and you've obviously seen them in that match scenario tonight and have that confidence
01:46
in them and know what they're all about.
01:47
Yeah, they've done great and obviously we've added Aiden O'Brien as well. We're trying
01:50
to get him up to speed quickly. So, we do need to maybe strengthen him in an area or
01:56
two, but from a manager's point of view, to pick up results while you're trying to implement
02:02
a way of playing and trying to get the players to believe in it, it's been very, very good.
02:06
But, like I say, don't get too high. Pick ourselves up, go again Thursday and start
02:13
really preparing for a tough away game on Saturday.
02:16
Good performance out there, but pleased to get those first two goals just before half-time.
02:21
Yeah, the timing of the goals was really good and it's always nice to see that we played
02:24
with two forwards today and it's nice to see them both get on the score sheet. Nice for
02:27
them to set each other up, etc. So, yeah, really pleased with them too and that they
02:34
did get on the score sheet and hopefully that will give them a lift and they know now what
02:40
strikers are like. When they get a goal or two, it puts them in a good spot.
02:44
I presume the change of formation was to suit the personnel who were playing and you were
02:47
happy with how that all worked?
02:49
Yeah, I've got two or three shapes that the boys need to learn and so that if we do need
02:54
to adapt in games, we can. But this was trying how to still be brave and try and play good
03:00
football with two strikers on the pitch and I thought they worked it really, really well
03:04
at times. So, yeah, good. I think two and a half days' worth of work. They need credit
03:09
because they've taken on information and they've applied it really well.
03:12
Yeah, so Tom and Lewis obviously before half-time and then Lewis straight after half-time gets
03:16
his second to make it three, a really nice goal.
03:18
Yeah, and they combine together. Lewis set up Tom for the first goal, great ball, great
03:23
run. Tom sets up Lewis for the second goal. So, that's pleasing. When you've got a strike
03:27
partnership, that's what you want. Innie came on and was a real handful and they looked
03:32
good when they came on. So, loads of positives, but let's not get carried away. We're fruiting
03:36
the next round great and it's trying to keep that. I always say, don't let the result affect
03:41
the performance. We've got to keep that consistency in our performance and hopefully the results
03:45
will follow.
03:46
Jamie Andrews in the midfield, good, nice work for him as well.
03:49
Yeah, great. Listen, no doubt seeing Jamie, I can tell he can handle the ball and I can
03:54
tell that he'll suit the way that I've got trying to get the team playing. It's obviously
03:59
difficult because Jermaine and Frank and Gorms have done well in the games and I was trying
04:04
to keep that consistency, but Jamie's come in and shown us, and Intsy to be fair. I thought
04:09
Intsy for an hour did really well as well. So, they've come in and they've shown me that
04:12
I've got loads of options.
04:13
Quadruple change on the hour mark, I presume that was pre-planned minutes-wise?
04:17
Yeah, Intsy an hour. Tunji had a slight thing in his hip, so we didn't want to risk him.
04:24
Intsy with an hour. Tom Lee had a slight, felt his groin a little bit, so we brought
04:28
him off. And like I say, Ben Winter, he's come back from an injury, so they were only
04:32
marked down for an hour.
04:33
Obviously, it was a strong quartet to bring on, wasn't it, with any Matt, Dale and Adam?
04:40
As the night's gone, as long as I don't get any information that I've picked up more injuries
04:44
than I thought, it kind of went according to plan with the performance, the result and
04:49
the minutes we needed to get there.
04:51
Yeah, they all made an impact and Matt rounds it off, obviously, right at the end there
04:53
just to make it four.
04:54
Yeah, absolutely. The only downside was Walker's not getting his hat checked.
04:58
Yeah, he obviously got the penalty and it was just one of those. And obviously, through
05:04
to Gainsborough, that's in a few weeks. I guess you'll park that for now and do a full
05:07
focus on the Oval on Saturday.
05:08
Yeah, park it for now. They beat York and we all know how difficult it is to beat York
05:12
this season. So, they must be very good and they must be expecting to go and do it again
05:19
to us. So, we'll have to be ready for that. But like I say, we've got some Saturdays.
05:24
We've got quite a lot of Saturday Tuesdays coming up and we're getting through this round,
05:27
we'll have more. So, we do need the depth of the squad and the players need to understand
05:31
that if we're going to achieve what we want this season.
05:33
Obviously, getting through tonight now, it keeps the winning habit going now for you.
05:37
Three wins and a draw in your first four games. Just keep the confidence rolling on.
05:40
Yeah, it's all about performance at the moment. It's all about trying to keep the boys at
05:44
a high level and hopefully we can give them the structure and they can take it on from
05:49
there. But like I say, we've got a lot of tough games and don't expect football going
05:53
a straight line. We'll have some down moments and it's not losing confidence when we do.
05:58
And obviously now, just a trip to the Oval on Saturday. Thoughts on that?
06:00
Tough game, always tough. Koop's a very good manager. You've got them up and then got them
06:04
into the top half of the league. So, always tough to go and get a result away at the Oval.
06:08
So, we'll have to show all sides of our games if we're going to get anything.
