Let's welcome Meggie Ochoa, one of the best Jiu-Jitsu athletes in the Philippines.
00:06
Good morning, Champ Meggie Ochoa.
00:08
Very blooming.
00:09
Welcome to PDB Sports. How are you?
00:12
Good morning.
00:13
Good morning.
00:14
Champ Meggie, how are you?
00:17
In the past few days, you posted on your Instagram account that you're retiring from the national team.
00:25
How is it so far being a retired Jiu-Jitsu player?
00:29
To be honest, I don't feel it yet.
00:32
Actually, officially, I sent a letter to the federation last December.
00:37
So, it's only been a month.
00:39
I'm still busy, but I have more time for other things.
00:46
Champ, can you share with us, what was the turning point when you decided to retire?
00:55
Actually, it's not just one turning point.
00:58
I think all throughout 2024, a lot has happened.
01:01
Number one, I started my own club, Solas Jiu-Jitsu.
01:06
And then number two, I started coaching the youth national team.
01:10
And when I experienced that, of course, my attention from being an athlete spread.
01:20
And my performance in 2024 wasn't that good because a lot of people were targeting me.
01:28
So, since then, I thought, of course, number one is, I really prayed for him.
01:36
And a lot of people asked me questions that I consider as mentors.
01:42
And then I thought, which of the three are you most willing to give up?
01:47
Being an athlete, your club, or the youth national team?
01:51
And among those three, being an athlete.
01:53
Because, of course, those two are just starting.
01:56
The other one, I've been there for a long time.
01:58
So, there.
01:59
Champ, wasn't it hard to make that decision?
02:02
Because in 2024, a lot of people targeted you.
02:06
And this is what you chose in your retirement as an athlete.
02:11
You chose not to focus on other things.
02:16
Yes, definitely.
02:17
It was hard because I've been an athlete for years.
02:19
You know, that's what you know how to do.
02:22
You know how to do it every day.
02:24
So, it wasn't an easy decision.
02:27
That's why a lot of people asked me questions.
02:29
Of course, I prayed.
02:30
Because for me, my motivation is to bring glory to God.
02:35
So, when I asked God, God, where do you want me?
02:40
Where can I give glory to you?
02:42
That's what I'll focus on.
02:44
And He led me here.
02:46
That's why He allowed me to decide that I know that this is what God wants.
02:52
That's great.
02:53
That's the best turning point.
02:55
When you think that it's time to retire.
02:58
That's your cue to stop.
03:02
But your transition was great.
03:04
You're still a Jiu-Jitsu athlete.
03:05
You're still going to be part of our Jiu-Jitsu team.
03:09
But based on your career,
03:12
let's go back a little bit.
03:14
The gold you won in the last Asian Games is the first gold for Jiu-Jitsu.
03:22
In the Philippines, it's for A-Shard.
03:24
But for you, Champ Meggie,
03:26
what was the highlight of your career as a Jiu-Jitsu athlete?
03:30
Well, that's one of the highlights.
03:33
The Asian Games.
03:34
Because in 2018, I won a bronze medal.
03:39
But that year, everyone expected that Annie and I would win gold.
03:44
Because in the previous year, Annie and I won gold in the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.
03:48
But in 2018, we both got burned out.
03:52
So we didn't deliver the gold.
03:54
So one of my goals is to get gold in the next Asian Games.
04:01
And it's not just one year of preparation.
04:04
After you finish one edition, you're already thinking about the next edition.
04:08
So the Asian Games is one of the highlights of my career.
04:12
Also because for the Filipinos, that's what they give importance to.
04:16
Even if I won a world championship,
04:18
the impact of the Asian Games is different in our country.
04:22
Yes.
04:23
The Asian Games made you emotional after the game.
04:27
Because you had a hip injury.
04:29
And you felt worse.
04:31
You had a flu.
04:32
Tell us about your injury in the finals match of the Asian Games.
04:36
Yes, that was intense.
04:37
That was one of my most intense experiences.
04:40
Because in the SEA Games, I got injured.
04:43
My meniscus was torn.
04:45
So I had a few months to recover.
04:47
And when I fought, my knee was taped.
04:50
That's why my hip was pulled in the semifinals match.
04:54
So it was a very fresh injury.
04:55
And then I had to fight in the finals match.
04:58
Three days before, I had a cramp.
05:01
So I still didn't feel good about the Asian Games.
05:05
So it was really intense.
05:08
Ultimately, I just depended on God during those times.
05:12
I literally prayed and said,
05:15
Lord, this is for you.
05:17
And I know that you won't let me here.
05:19
So while I was fighting, I was really praying.
05:21
Because you know, your body can't take it anymore.
05:25
But God really brought me there.
05:27
That's why I know that it's Him.
05:28
And it's really for Him.
05:31
With all these challenges,
05:34
did we expect it?
05:36
Because we got injured in the Asian Games.
05:39
Did we expect to get the gold?
05:43
Well, it's hard to say expect.
05:46
Because, of course, I will always hope to get the gold.
05:50
But you really don't know what you'll get.
05:53
You can only control the effort you'll give.
05:55
So that's what I'm thinking.
05:56
I'll just give my best.
05:59
I think it was during the pandemic, right?
06:01
No, it was in 2023.
06:03
It was during the pandemic.
06:06
It was during the transition period.
06:09
Since you mentioned earlier that you're coaching our youth national team in Jiu-Jitsu.
06:16
How was it coaching them?
06:18
For sure, these athletes are really lucky to have a coach like you.
06:22
Of course, you're the only one who has a coach.
06:24
How was it being a coach so far?
06:27
What advice would you give to these athletes?
06:32
The experience of being a coach of the youth national team,
06:36
I didn't expect it.
06:38
It wasn't in my original plan to do this soon.
06:41
A lot of things happened.
06:43
That's why I had the chance to coach last year.
06:46
And the experience was amazing.
06:49
When I experienced being a coach of the youth national team,
06:51
that's when I saw that this is what I want to do.
06:55
They're not just the ones who will follow our footsteps.
06:59
They're the ones who will go through whatever we've been through.
07:03
So, it's really exciting to pour ourselves into them.
07:07
To the kids, we see them excel.
07:11
And we want to see them continue to excel.
07:16
Eventually, I hope we can deliver Olympic gold in the Olympics of Jiu-Jitsu.
07:22
In terms of teaching kids,
07:25
are you a champ?
07:26
When did you start?
07:27
Were you a kid when you started?
07:29
No.
07:30
No.
07:31
I started when I was old.
07:32
Because I'm old now.
07:34
I started after college.
07:37
I was 22 or 23.
07:40
We still have hope.
07:41
Really?
07:42
Yes.
07:44
It's not too late to start.
07:46
But why did we choose that?
07:49
Because it was after college, right?
07:51
When I joined the sport.
07:53
Yes.
07:54
When I was in college, I was in track and field.
07:56
So, I was an athlete.
07:57
But I didn't know anything about Jiu-Jitsu at all.
08:00
Although, I did judo for PE.
08:01
But after college, I tried to do mixed martial arts.
08:05
Just as a hobby.
08:06
I just did it as a hobby.
08:07
And then, I tried it.
08:08
I really liked it.
08:09
I wanted to fight.
08:10
But because I was so small,
08:12
I didn't have a weight class.
08:13
And it's hard to find an opponent for a small girl.
08:16
So, one of the instructors told me,
08:20
Why don't you just do Jiu-Jitsu?
08:22
You'll have more opponents.
08:24
So, I tried to do Jiu-Jitsu.
08:26
And I started winning.
08:28
Then, I got addicted.
08:31
That's so inspiring.
08:32
I was inspired because...
08:33
I'll do Jiu-Jitsu right after the show.
08:35
Me, too.
08:36
Me, too.
08:37
I'll teach you right away.
08:39
This is Champ Meggie.
08:40
Since now, she's coaching our youth national team.
08:43
And for sure,
08:44
if they have a competition,
08:45
you'll be there, too.
08:46
But for now,
08:47
I'll just be by their side.
08:48
You'll just watch them while they compete.
08:50
What do you miss the most
08:52
when you compete for the Philippines
08:55
in Jiu-Jitsu?
08:57
I miss the people the most.
08:59
I miss my teammates, coaches,
09:02
all of my teammates
09:04
on the journey.
09:05
And actually,
09:06
I know that they're still there.
09:08
I'm still here.
09:09
But you know,
09:10
it's different when you prepare together.
09:12
You fight together,
09:13
you celebrate together,
09:15
you comfort each other
09:17
when you lose.
09:18
So, that's one of the things
09:20
that I miss the most.
09:22
And also, Champ,
09:23
this martial arts,
09:25
here in the Philippines,
09:27
Jiu-Jitsu is not that popular yet
09:31
or accessible to everyone
09:33
in the city or province.
09:36
What progress do we see
09:39
as of now?
09:40
Yes.
09:41
As of now,
09:42
we still don't have what we want
09:43
in terms of Jiu-Jitsu.
09:44
But there's a lot of progress.
09:46
Like what I said in my post,
09:49
in 2018,
09:50
I was the only medalist
09:51
in the JGIF World Championship.
09:53
But in the 2024 World Championship,
09:56
there were so many medalists.
09:58
And then,
09:59
even the youth,
10:00
there were so many medalists.
10:02
So, just from 2018
10:04
until 2024,
10:06
there's a lot of progress
10:08
that the Philippines went through.
10:10
And it's exciting
10:11
because I know that
10:12
if we just continue
10:14
and maybe we'll improve
10:16
how we develop the sport,
10:19
then we'll reach so far.
10:22
What more,
10:24
if your coaches...
10:28
Champ,
10:29
Maggie,
10:30
you mentioned that
10:31
besides coaching,
10:32
you'll establish your own club.
10:33
Tell us about the beginnings
10:35
of that club.
10:37
How many people are enrolled?
10:39
Do you have statistics?
10:40
And what's your long-term goal
10:42
for this club of Jiu-Jitsu?
10:44
Yes.
10:45
So, for now,
10:46
our club is still small.
10:47
We just started in August last year.
10:49
We're in Robinson's Magnolia
10:52
in Hype 24-7 Fitness.
10:54
So, we're just sharing
10:57
that space.
10:58
So, we're just in the beginning.
10:59
But I have a big vision
11:01
for Solas Jiu-Jitsu.
11:03
And it also aligns
11:05
with the vision
11:06
for the Youth National Team.
11:07
Because what I want is
11:09
whatever God allows me to learn
11:13
throughout my Jiu-Jitsu journey,
11:15
this is where I'll share it
11:17
with Solas Jiu-Jitsu.
11:18
And I also want
11:21
the people who join here
11:23
to experience the best possible
11:27
that they can experience
11:28
through Jiu-Jitsu.
11:29
So that they can improve themselves,
11:33
not just in Jiu-Jitsu,
11:34
but also help
11:36
outside of the mat.
11:37
So, that's what I want.
11:38
Whatever help I can give
11:40
to the people who will join us,
11:41
they can get that
11:43
from Solas Jiu-Jitsu.
11:44
For those who want to join,
11:47
how can they join here?
11:49
Is there an age bracket?
11:51
Or maybe you can elaborate.
11:53
Yes. Actually,
11:54
it's perfect now
11:55
because we have a promo.
11:56
I want.
11:57
Yes.
11:58
You can also come.
11:59
Oh, we're already here.
12:01
After.
12:02
Today, we have a class.
12:04
But our promo is free.
12:05
The training of those
12:07
who haven't tried Jiu-Jitsu yet is free.
12:09
Every Saturday,
12:10
we have basics classes.
12:12
So, it's free.
12:13
It's only until January 25.
12:16
So, if you want to try,
12:17
you can go.
12:18
For age bracket,
12:19
as young as 4 years old,
12:21
we have classes.
12:22
Of course, the kids
12:24
and the adults are separated.
12:26
But there.
12:27
If you're young,
12:28
if you're old,
12:29
you can try here
12:30
at Solas Jiu-Jitsu.
12:31
Just go to
12:33
HYPE247FITNESS
12:35
at Robinson's Magnolia
12:37
or message us
12:38
on Instagram or Facebook.
12:39
Wow.
12:40
That's it for us.
12:41
Champ Meggy,
12:42
from a world champ,
12:44
and of course,
12:45
a medalist in Asian Games
12:47
and in SEA Games,
12:48
what do you mean
12:49
to future Jiu-Jitsu players
12:51
that the Philippines will represent
12:52
in international competitions?
12:54
Yes. So, to future Jiu-Jitsu players,
12:58
it's exciting.
12:59
It's very exciting
13:00
to see you
13:02
develop from the time
13:04
that you started
13:05
until the time
13:06
that we'll see
13:07
that you're already achieving
13:09
whatever your dreams are.
13:11
And we're just here,
13:12
we're your sisters,
13:13
your brothers,
13:14
for you,
13:15
so that you can continue
13:16
your journey
13:17
until whenever
13:18
you want to do this.
13:20
And stay focused,
13:22
stay consistent,
13:24
and don't forget
13:25
to enjoy what you're doing
13:26
and not forget the reasons
13:27
why you're doing
13:28
what you're doing.
13:29
Again,
13:30
champ,
13:31
thank you so much
13:32
for visiting us.
13:34
For your retirement,
13:35
for your coaching.
13:37
We'll see you
13:38
in the coverage of Jiu-Jitsu.
13:39
Thank you so much, champ.
