This month of January is Thyroid Awareness Month.
00:04
This month, the public's awareness of thyroid-related diseases and thyroid cancer is increasing.
00:10
That's right. Here at CineDoc, we are joined by Head and Neck Surgeon, Dr. Joseph Ray Richard Cedeno.
00:18
Good morning, Dr. King. Welcome to Rise and Shine, Philippines. This is Dian and Audrey.
00:22
Good morning.
00:23
Good morning. Thank you for having me.
00:27
Okay, Doc, before we continue, for those of our viewers who don't know or have forgotten,
00:33
can you explain what thyroid is and what its function is in our body?
00:40
Okay. Thyroid is located here, right in front of our brain.
00:45
The function of our thyroid gland is very important because it controls our metabolism.
00:53
In simple terms, let's make it simple. It's like the battery of our body.
00:58
It produces a chemical called FT3 and FT4.
01:02
It's like the one that gives electricity to our body or speeds up our metabolism.
01:09
It's important because it helps to control our heartbeat, whether it's fast or slow,
01:19
our thoughts, whether our thoughts are sharp or not, it depends on the chemical that our body produces.
01:29
The function of this thyroid is very important.
01:32
Right, Doc? There are two types of thyroid disease, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, hypo and hyper.
01:40
What is the difference between the two?
01:43
Yes, that's very important.
01:45
The chemical that our thyroid gland produces, FT3 and FT4,
01:49
if the production of those hormones is too high, that's called hyperthyroidism.
01:58
The opposite is hypothyroidism.
02:00
We can compare hyperthyroidism to...
02:04
It's like you're having a lot of coffee.
02:06
You're having palpitations, you're waking up, it's hard to sleep, you get hot easily.
02:12
The opposite is hypothyroidism.
02:16
It's like you're lacking energy.
02:19
You're tired, you're sleepy, you think slowly,
02:24
you become drowsy, your body lacks energy.
02:31
Those are the low thyroid hormones.
02:35
Well, Doc, what happens to a person's body when they have hypothyroidism?
02:44
That's right.
02:45
The signs of hyperthyroidism are good.
02:48
It's like you're having a lot of coffee.
02:50
Your metabolism is fast, your energy is fast.
02:53
You get tired easily.
02:55
The patient gets tired.
02:56
There are others, their eyes get blurry.
02:58
They have palpitations, they're always nervous, it's hard to sleep.
03:02
That's hyperthyroidism.
03:04
Hypothyroidism, on the other hand, is the opposite.
03:07
You get nervous because your metabolism is slow.
03:10
Your heart beats slow.
03:12
There are others, their hair falls off and their skin becomes dry and constipated.
03:18
It's hard to sleep.
03:20
Those are the other signs of hypothyroidism.
03:24
All right.
03:25
Doc, what are the risk factors
03:27
or what could be the reasons for a thyroid problem?
03:32
One of them is individual.
03:36
Well, first and foremost,
03:39
one cause is the lack of iodine in the body.
03:42
But most of our food today has a lot of iodine.
03:46
And you can get iodine from seafood, fish, shellfish, even from meat.
03:51
Beef and chicken, not much on pork.
03:55
The amount of iodine in beef or chicken is low,
03:58
but it's still higher than in shellfish.
04:00
You can also get this from eggs, veggies, fruits.
04:06
Other causes of problems with thyroid would be high risk.
04:11
If there's a family with a goiter,
04:14
it's better to get it checked.
04:17
Infection, even viral infection can cause thyroid problems.
04:22
Okay.
04:23
Okay, Doc, what are the symptoms?
04:25
Are there any early signs or symptoms
04:29
that an individual might have
04:32
to recognize that this is a thyroid problem?
04:37
Commonly, the first thing to check is if there's a bump in the front of the neck.
04:42
If there's a bump, it's better to get it checked right away
04:46
if there's a bump in the front of the neck.
04:50
The second thing is palpitations.
04:53
If your hands are shaking,
04:55
it's also a sign that your thyroid hormones are rising
04:59
and there's hyperthyroidism.
05:02
So the most common thing is a bump in the neck, palpitations,
05:06
nervousness, rapid weight gain.
05:09
Those are the common signs and symptoms.
05:13
But commonly, it runs in the family.
05:16
So if there's a family, it's better to get it checked.
05:19
Alright.
05:20
How do we diagnose if a person has a thyroid problem?
05:25
There are blood tests that we do.
05:27
It's called the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone or TSH.
05:30
We check the thyroid hormones,
05:33
FT4, 3T3, 3T4,
05:36
and most importantly, the thyroid ultrasound.
05:40
Those are the basic things that we check
05:42
to find out if there's a thyroid problem.
05:45
Okay.
05:46
How can an individual avoid having a thyroid problem?
05:54
That's healthy living.
05:56
First of all, I've repeatedly said that it can run in the family.
06:02
So if there's a family, get it checked immediately.
06:07
Eat food that are rich in iodine.
06:11
There are foods that decrease the absorption of iodine.
06:14
These are cabbage, broccoli, and fish.
06:17
But if it's cooked or boiled, it will have no effect.
06:21
Because there are foods that decrease iodine in our body.
06:25
If it's fresh food.
06:27
But if it's cooked, not much effect.
06:29
One thing that's important to know is that thyroid,
06:32
even though it's a cancer,
06:34
it's usually curable.
06:36
So it's better to get it checked early and get well soon.
06:42
Doc, is there a connection to paninigarilyo?
06:47
Paninigarilyo increases the risk of cancer.
06:52
So yes, it can be related.
06:55
It decreases our immune system.
06:57
And thus, it can cause thyroid cancer.
07:01
All right.
07:02
Doc, for those who don't have time to get checked up,
07:07
is there anything you can do at home to check if it's possible
07:11
that a person has a problem with their thyroid?
07:16
Like what we talked about earlier,
07:18
the signs and symptoms,
07:20
if there's a tightness,
07:21
sometimes it tightens the neck.
07:23
Especially if there's a tightness in the mucous,
07:25
and if you move,
07:26
the mucous also moves.
07:28
Most likely, the problem is in the thyroid.
07:31
If the mucous moves and doesn't move,
07:34
it's usually just pulmonary.
07:36
But if you move,
07:37
and the mucous moves along with the movement,
07:40
it's possible that there's a goiter or thyroid nodule.
07:43
A goiter is a thyroid gland that grows or has a mucous inside.
07:49
It's called a goiter or bosho in Tagalog.
07:53
Okay, Doc.
07:54
Lastly,
07:55
what is your message or advice to our RSPs,
07:59
especially this Thyroid Awareness Month?
08:03
Let's not neglect our thyroid.
08:05
It's a very important part of our body.
08:08
If there's a problem,
08:09
there's a chance that you'll have a goiter,
08:11
and if there's a history in the family,
08:13
you should get it checked immediately.
08:15
It's often used as a medicine,
08:17
and it can be used as a remedy.
08:19
Well, thank you very much
08:21
for the information you shared with us,
08:23
Dr. King Cedeno.
08:24
Thank you for the free medicine.
08:26
Thank you very much, Doc.
08:28
You're welcome.
