I watched the Celtic T-Wolf game last week and I was sick to my stomach.
00:07
I'm watching this game and they shot at one point there were 59 points in the game and 37 threes
00:12
had been shot. By the time it was over there was like a million threes taken and I mean it was
00:18
brick city. And I know that the Celtics won the game by three but that wasn't what I was watching.
00:23
All I was watching was what's wrong with the NBA in some capacity. There is no fundamental
00:29
reason in my view to shoot that many threes. I do not get it. I think that's what's wrong with the
00:36
NBA. The NBA has began a stretch of let's say a year or two now where all they do is run up
00:42
and down and shoot threes and they wonder why people aren't watching. Bob Knight said it 30
00:47
years ago and I don't know whether you respect Bob Knight or not but he said 30 years ago that
00:53
the three will ruin basketball. It is going to ruin the game and I think it's starting to come
01:00
to fruition. I do not enjoy watching NBA guys chuck threes on every single possession.
01:06
Well it's a fact that Pharrell you have teams that are shooting the most Celtics are going to
01:09
shatter the NBA record for most threes taken and threes made in the season. They're going to
01:14
shatter it and I can speak to this as a coach right and that's a skills trainer. Pharrell it
01:20
has trickled down to the college game. It's trickled down to the high school game. I'll give
01:24
you an example. I know a kid I trained as a D1 player, a mid-major D1 player that's a fantastic
01:31
shooter that has been told if you take a pull-up jumper you're coming out the game. Doesn't matter
01:38
if you make or miss. I've had two high school kids, big-time high school players say that their
01:42
high school coach told them if they shoot a pull-up mid-range shot they're getting pulled.
01:48
The problem with the NBA and with every other sport now Pharrell it's all about the analytics
01:54
and these these nerds from MIT or Stanford who haven't even touched a damn basketball in their
02:02
lives are now telling coaches based on the analytics this is the shot you need to take
02:08
or not take. I'm done with it. I'm tired of it. Give me a minute. Hey let me tell you something
02:13
folks. If you're in my if you're in the tri-state area and you come to a coach's young workout
02:18
guess what you don't shoot in my workouts. That's right. Threes. Everything is footwork,
02:24
pull-up, mid-range. That's why particularly the European players are better than the Americans
02:30
right now because of their skill work, their footwork, and their fundamentals. Isn't it better
02:35
to watch cutting and moving and passing and ball movement and backdoor layups and dunks
02:42
and mid-ranges and elbow jays and guys that can knock down 12 to 18 footers? Isn't that a pure
02:48
game that you love watching? At this NBA it's become unwatchable. I mean let's just face facts.
02:54
Well I think the thing Pharrell is you have to understand this you know I'm gonna take it from
02:58
a coach's perspective again. If I'm a coach okay and I got a kid that's a shooter especially an
03:03
undersized guard I'm gonna run him off the three-point line and then I'm gonna meet him
03:08
at the room with the big right because if you're not going to shoot a pull-up game contest the
03:12
three run them off the line if you have a pretty good shot blocker underneath the basket then you
03:18
have a chance to make it work that's when you look at a team like you know a game against Minnesota
03:21
I mean the Celtics shot the Celtics shot 57 threes out of 92 attempts. That's maddening
03:30
Pharrell what's happening in the NBA and the sad thing is like I said it's trickling to college
03:35
it's trickling to high school and it's trickling to AU and it sucks.
