Thousands across WA gather in Perth for New Year Festivities

Thousands of people across WA have welcomed the New Year, with festivities in Perth including two huge fireworks displays. Temperatures soared as the celebrations continued today, with many spending the first day of the year at the beach

00:00As the sun set on 2024, thousands of Western Australians flocked to the coast to celebrate.

00:12Early events in Fremantle and Elizabeth Quay had a family focus.

00:15It's so nice to be with all the families, all the kids, having a great time here, everybody's

00:19having a good dance.

00:23With the kids in bed, revelers kicked on with more than 100,000 people flooding events across

00:29the city.

00:30No better place on earth to be here in Perth, on New Year's Eve.

00:37Happy New Year!

00:38And 2025 was welcomed with a bang, with firework displays at half past eight and midnight.

00:49It just looked beautiful, like one of the best fireworks I've ever seen.

00:53The night ended early for some, with more than 120 arrests across the state.

00:58There was also a test of WA's new knife laws, with hundreds of scans, but fewer than ten

01:03edged weapons seized.

01:07But police say the crowds were largely well behaved.

01:10Most of Western Australians enjoy the night, they bring families, they bring kids and they

01:14have a good time and that's what we want too.

01:17With temperatures heading for the high 30s in Perth, many enjoyed the first day of the

01:23year by the beach.

01:25Some started with exercise, others reflected on their goals for the new year.
