00:00
And it was on Monday, the second to last day of 2024,
00:04
that we witnessed certainly some good football,
00:06
both college and pro.
00:08
And we didn't expect it might be a good game,
00:11
a meaningless game on Monday night down in Santa Clara
00:14
at Levi's Stadium between the San Francisco 49ers
00:17
and the Detroit Lions.
00:18
But it turned out to really be a dandy.
00:21
And of course, speaking of dandy, Dan Campbell,
00:24
a dandy indeed.
00:26
You gotta love this guy.
00:27
He didn't need to play his starters.
00:30
This game was relatively meaningless.
00:32
It didn't mean positioning as far as seeding.
00:35
That game, of course, will come this Sunday night,
00:37
the final game of the 2024 regular season in the NFL
00:42
will be a biggie.
00:43
The Detroit Lions taking on the Minnesota Vikings
00:46
at Ford Field in Detroit,
00:47
and that will be for the number one seed in the NFC.
00:51
The 49ers have been eliminated from the playoffs,
00:55
so the game meant nothing to them,
00:56
but the Detroit Lions come away with a victory
00:59
and a cover, 40 to 34, your final.
01:03
This was really a back and forth affair.
01:05
Maybe that defense, something to be concerned about
01:08
for the Detroit Lions going forward.
01:10
Of course, a lot of injuries on that defense.
01:13
This was once the most powerful team in the NFL,
01:16
but they have been hampered by injuries as of late.
01:18
We'll see if they can make that patchwork necessary
01:22
that they need to improve before that meeting
01:25
with the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night.
01:27
But a great game, certainly at Levi's Stadium.
01:29
The game sails over the total.
01:31
Again, 40 to 34, your final.
01:33
The Lions cover as three and a half,
01:36
even as high as four and a half point favorites
01:38
prior to kick.
01:39
And after the game, they asked Coach Campbell
01:42
about the decision that he had to make
01:44
about resting the starters or going for broke here
01:47
and playing everybody as per normal.
01:49
And, you know, Dan Campbell is that aggressive guy,
01:52
but he said he had to mull over this decision
01:55
for a while heading in.
01:56
I thought a lot about it, you know,
01:58
I thought about it leading up to the game.
01:59
I thought about it last night.
02:00
I told the staff, but I ended up settling on
02:05
the right thing to do was play these guys.
02:07
And because we owed it to the team, you know,
02:11
and it was just one of those positions we were in.
02:16
It's just hard to say who you're gonna sit.
02:18
And it's not fair to ask guys to play
02:22
that haven't been prepared to play, you know?
02:24
So, yeah, that was tough.
02:27
And I think the biggest thing is there was things
02:30
we wanted to do better than we did last week.
02:33
And we did, we cleaned a lot of things up offensively.
02:36
I thought defensively, we talked about getting takeaways,
02:38
we got takeaways.
02:39
And so that'll always serve you well
02:42
going into the next week.
02:43
And look, there was never gonna be anything, you know,
02:47
we knew what this is.
02:48
You're out on the West Coast, you go, man, it's all good.
02:51
That's what we do.
02:52
You know what I mean?
02:53
That's what we do.
02:54
Like we love it hard and this is our deal right now.
02:58
So we're looking forward to this,
03:00
everything about this week.
03:03
This is what we do and we love it hard.
03:05
Dan Campbell, you gotta love them.
03:06
They win and they will take on again,
03:09
the Minnesota Vikings this Sunday.
03:10
The final game of the 2024 regular season
03:13
will be for all the marbles in the NFC Minnesota,
03:17
really a surprise team this year.
03:19
And, you know, hats off to them,
03:20
no matter what happens on Sunday,
03:22
an incredible season for their coach,
03:24
Kevin O'Connell and company,
03:25
and equally so for Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions.
03:29
Kyle Shanahan on the losing end,
03:31
head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.
03:33
I mentioned that they have been eliminated
03:36
from the playoffs for a couple of weeks now.
03:38
So how does he prepare his team?
03:40
And it's the Monday night spotlight.
03:42
We understand that, but Kyle said, you know,
03:44
we treat it as any other contest.
03:47
Try to approach the same way we approach every game,
03:49
try our hardest to win and try to play our best.
03:52
I thought the guys played real hard.
03:53
I thought they competed,
03:54
had about every chance to beat
03:56
a real good football team there.
03:59
Obviously not everything was perfect.
04:02
And I thought, you know,
04:03
we weren't able to slow them down enough on defense.
04:06
It's a real good offense,
04:07
but still thought we should slow them down
04:09
a little bit more.
04:11
Thought the difference in the game though was,
04:13
you know, and then obviously the type of game it was,
04:15
they'd been in a number of those games this year,
04:18
but we had to win it in a shootout.
04:20
And I thought the difference was our two turnovers
04:24
and getting none.
04:25
Once that happened, it kind of,
04:27
that's why you end up losing by one score.
04:29
Shanahan was also asked about his struggling place kicker,
04:33
Jake Moody, who missed two field goals on Monday night
04:37
and an extra point.
04:38
I believe it was 10 out of his last 17 field goals
04:42
had been made.
04:43
And I don't think that counted the last one.
04:45
I heard that during the broadcast.
04:47
I believe it was Joe Buck mentioned that.
04:49
So a real struggle for a guy that was a third round pick
04:52
out of Michigan who they had high hopes for.
04:55
He was asked if they will be evaluating
04:57
the kicker position in the off season.
05:00
He said, yes, we're evaluating all positions,
05:02
but it'll be interesting to see if Jake Moody
05:04
is a San Francisco 49er going forward.
05:07
There was some, you know, insult to injury, if you will,
05:12
for the San Francisco 49ers
05:14
for their star quarterback, Brock Purdy.
05:16
Of course, he had surgery in the off season
05:19
on that elbow, on the throwing arm,
05:21
and suffered a bit of a nick to that same arm
05:25
with a sack towards the end of the game on Monday night.
05:29
And Purdy talked about that, said, you know,
05:31
he's not really sure if it's anything serious or not,
05:34
but not feeling so great after re-injuring,
05:37
possibly, this arm again on Monday against the Lions.
05:40
Any indication about the status of your elbow?
05:43
Nothing right now.
05:45
We're gonna get an MRI tomorrow and see, so.
05:47
Is it a concern to you at this point?
05:49
I mean, it doesn't feel the best,
05:50
but just leave it at that.
05:53
So we'll see you tomorrow.
05:54
Can you describe what happened?
05:57
On that sack, I got hit on the backside,
06:00
and yeah, basically just my arm was on fire kind of thing.
06:04
And so I tried throwing a couple on the sideline
06:08
and I couldn't at that point.
06:09
So yeah, it has nothing to do with tapping out of the game
06:13
or anything like that.
06:15
Love my teammates and I'll go to the very end for them
06:18
and this fan base and everybody.
06:19
So that's what hurts me is like,
06:22
I couldn't finish the game.
06:23
But again, we'll see tomorrow.
06:27
Speculation now looms if Purdy will start
06:30
the final game of the season here in week 18.
06:33
Of course, he has a big contract to negotiate
06:36
in the off season.
06:37
We'll see if he gets that top quarterback money.
06:39
That's really a decision the San Francisco 49ers
06:43
have to make going forward with their quarterback.
06:46
The final player drafted in the draft a few years back,
06:49
Brock Purdy, amazing where his career has come.
06:52
Now decision time for San Francisco
06:54
if they're going to pay him the big time bucks.
06:57
Other news in the NFL,
06:59
the New York Jets looking for their next coach.
07:02
Of course, Jeff Olbrich, a former San Francisco 49er,
07:05
an interim coach there filling in for Robert Sala.
07:10
And now they look to make a permanent move here
07:12
and both Ron Rivera and apparently Rex Ryan,
07:16
our candidates.
07:16
Of course, Ryan coached the Jets formerly
07:19
and Ron Rivera, his latest stint
07:21
with the Washington Commanders.
07:23
So two names out there currently,
07:25
apparently interviewing or being considered
07:27
by the New York Jets to be their new head coach in 2025.
07:32
Not good news for these athletes
07:34
and their homes being burglarized.
07:37
Apparently this is becoming more of a thing.
07:39
We heard about it with Joe Burrow,
07:41
the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback,
07:43
Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelsey,
07:45
the Kansas City Chiefs duo.
07:47
Apparently their homes have been burglarized as well.
07:50
And now the latest moving over into the NBA,
07:53
Luka Doncic home was burglarized recently here,
07:56
Dallas police reporting that.
07:59
So tough news there.
08:00
The FBI now getting involved.
08:02
Apparently some organized crimes possibly
08:04
out of South America getting involved in this thing.
08:07
And they warn these spouses, girlfriends,
08:09
what have you of these athletes
08:11
while they're playing their games,
08:12
not to go on social media and tell your friends
08:14
that the home is not occupied.
08:17
But we will see where that goes going forward.
08:20
Also some college football news,
08:22
Missouri beat Iowa in the Music City Bowl on Monday, 27-24.
08:28
Missouri covered as a one and a half point favorite
08:31
and that game sailed over the total of 41 and a half.
08:35
The Tigers finished the season at 10 and three
08:38
and the Iowa Hawkeyes finished the season at eight and five.
