Teammates, what are the things you should look out for in powerlifting?
00:09
Let's go back to the interview with former President Eddie Torres of the Powerlifting
00:15
Association of the Philippines.
00:17
Sir, while powerlifting is hot, my first question to you is, can you explain when the powerlifting
00:26
championships were established and the reason behind its creation?
00:31
Yeah, the Powerlifting Association of the Philippines, or in short, the PAP, was established
00:38
in 1982.
00:39
So more than 40 years ago, and former President Fidel Ramos was supporting it.
00:52
So in the early 1990s, it was recognized by the Philippine Sports Commission.
01:00
So from there, the sport really grew.
01:05
Since your time, Sir Eddie, how big has powerlifting become in the country?
01:11
Alright, back in the 1980s, there were around 20 people, 30 people at most.
01:21
Ngayon, we have several hundreds that are joining already.
01:25
Even sa mga regional competitions, we started yung middle-out championships mga 20 years
01:32
ago.
01:33
Sumasalim mga lima, walo, katitig lang.
01:36
It has grown more than tenfold ngayon.
01:41
And yung besides championships naman, we started in 1998, mga 30 people sumasalit
01:48
dyan.
01:49
Ngayon halos sa 200 na rin sumasalit.
01:53
So if you look at the growth, it's been very good.
01:57
Mabagal lang yung growth sa umpisa, pero the past ten years, talaga nag-accelerate na.
02:03
Alright Sir Eddie, and of course, knowing po na kayo po ang record holder up until now,
02:10
and with all your achievements po Sir Eddie, ano ba yung meaning ng powerlifting po para
02:16
sa inyo?
02:18
Well, ano yan eh, since I was in college, pwede matagal na yun, when I got into the
02:25
sport.
02:26
Syempre lahat naman nag-uumpisa, mahina, maraming tatalo sa inyo, and considering konti
02:33
lang sumasali dati, tapos may tumatalo pa sa inyo, it's just na talaga, hindi man pwedeng
02:40
pak-uumpisa mo, magaling ka kaagad.
02:43
But later on, everyone can grow in the sport, and in my case, I was privileged to be part
02:50
of the national team for about two decades.
02:53
Marami na ang nakuha kong biyaya sa sport, and from here, parang gusto ko lang maibalik
03:01
sa mga bata ngayon.
03:03
Yes po nga Sir Eddie, nabanggit nyo nga po noon na college pa po, so talagang matagal
03:09
na rin, and ngayon nga, 2024 na, of course, maraming mga kabataan, and mga magagaling
03:17
din ngayon sa powerlifting, and sino po ba yung mga powerlifters na dapat rin abangan
03:22
ng tao, and what extent po yung potential na nakikita po natin sa kanila?
03:26
Alright, well, we just came back from the World Championships in Iceland, mga two weeks
03:33
ago.
03:35
So yung mga bata, yung mga teenager dati, na were trying to develop, nagwagi doon sa
03:43
World Championships.
03:45
Number one dyan si Reggie Ramirez from Ormoc.
03:51
During his junior years, and meron pa yung sub-junior years para mga teens, hindi pa
04:01
siya maka... oo, nakapag Asian records siya doon.
04:06
Ngayon lang siya nakakuha ng world record nung nasa, ngayon mga 30 years old na siya.
04:13
Kasi ang peak ng powerlifter can be in your 40s.
04:18
So ngayon, kahit hindi siya nakakuha ng mga world junior records doon dati, two weeks
04:23
ago nakapag world open record siya.
04:27
So gold medal sa world record, and of course, Asian record din yan.
04:33
Something he could not achieve at a younger age.
04:37
Then second natin, another medalist sa World Championships, si Veronica Umpon.
04:44
She's from Tacloban.
04:46
Bali nung junior years niya, yung teen years sa sub-juniors, hindi siya nakapag world champion,
04:55
although nakakasungkit ng medals sa mga ibang events.
04:58
Pagtanda niya, pagpasok niya sa mga junior years niya, abay, nag-world champion dalawang
05:05
beses pa.
05:06
So you don't have to start off na magaling kaagad, champion kaagad.
05:11
If you work on it, talaga ang aakyat ka.
05:15
Si Veronica, last year was her last year in the juniors.
05:21
Ngayon, nasa open category lang siya.
05:23
So ang first sabak niya sa World Championships, naka-silver medal pa siya in the open category.
05:29
And I would say she, well, she is the youngest ever Filipino, male or female, to win a medal
05:36
at the World Open Championships.
05:38
So we start them young, and papahinugin natin sila, and we get older.
05:43
Grabe Sir Eddie, ang dami nga nating mga pambato talaga sa national team, yan si Veronica
05:48
Umpon, and yung nabanggit niyo nga din po, no?
05:51
Pero Sir, noong nakaraan lang po, kakatapos lang din ng Mindanao Leg, if I'm not mistaken
05:57
po, kamusta po yung turn out?
06:01
Ayan, yung Mindanao Leg, ginawa sa General Santos City, it's been growing fast the past
06:10
few years.
06:11
Doon nga nagumpisa, mga eight lifters ang dati.
06:15
And then last year, malaki ang jump, more than double the number of participants.
06:22
And then this year, just last weekend, umakit ng another 50 percent.
06:27
So syempre, mas nakakapagod for the officials, but we enjoy it kasi nakikita namin yung growth.
06:34
And it's not just the quantity, pati yung quality ng mga powerlifters sa Mindanao.
06:41
Yung laki ng tinaasa, actually nagulat ako sa performance nila last weekend.
06:46
May mga, for the first time, mga nagbubuat ang 300 kilos, na never nagawa dati sa Mindanao.
06:54
And two of them actually lifted 300 kilos.
06:57
Opo, Sir Eddie, para po maklaro din ng publiko, ano ba yung pagkakaiba, Sir, ng powerlifting
07:05
sa weightlifting naman?
07:08
Ang weightlifting, mga overhead lifts, so nakikita nyo yung kailangan idilin, diba?
07:14
Yung first event na yung snatch, where you lift it from the floor, directly overhead in one motion ng bar.
07:25
Sa clean and jerk naman, two motions.
07:28
Ibubuat mo, lagay mo muna sa clavicle mo, and then saka iangat overhead.
07:34
So yun ang weightlifting.
07:36
Ang powerlifting naman, powerlifting movements are actually the training exercises also for weightlifting.
07:43
So ang unang event dyan, yung squat.
07:46
So yung nakikita sa video, unayin ko yan, yung deadlift yan, parang partial weightlifting movement.
07:53
But since partial lang sya, you can lift a lot heavier, usually more than double what you can lift sa snatch.
08:02
Itong mga event, you can see now, the bench press.
08:05
Yan naman ang upper body strength.
08:07
Yan siguro medyo nalalayo sa weightlifting, where you bring the bar down to your chest,
08:13
nakahiga sa bench, and then you press the weight up while lying on the bench.
08:19
Kaya ito kinawag ng bench press.
08:21
Yung squat naman, what you just saw is having the bar behind you, sa traps more slightly below,
08:29
instead of sa front, like in the clean and jerk.
08:31
So just squat deep enough to the legal depth, tapos itataas mo.
08:37
So movements in powerlifting can be a lot slower than weightlifting.
08:42
Kasi ang weightlifting, hindi mo pwedeng gawing slow motion.
08:45
Kasi may momentum kang inalagay sa bar.
08:49
Sa powerlifting, you can struggle to bring it up and be successful.
08:53
That's why the weights lifted sa powerlifting are a lot more than weightlifting.
08:59
It's not easier or harder, it's just a different way of lifting.
09:04
But technique-wise, powerlifting is a lot easier.
09:07
Mas simple lang movements.
09:11
Sir Eddie, you were coined as the strongest man in the Philippines during your time.
09:18
You were in the national team for two decades.
09:20
Pero marami ring magtataka or magtatanong, paano ba kayo nagsimula sa powerlifting?
09:26
And how were you able na makuha itong title na strongest man in the Philippines?
09:32
Yung strongest man title, ano lang naman yan, yung highest powerlifting total of the three events.
09:41
The squat, the bench press, and the deadlift combined.
09:45
So yeah, that time I had the highest total.
09:49
Although marami lang malapit na makabreak doon.
09:54
But now, kasi there are two formats of powerlifting.
09:58
Dati kasi, ang powerlifting may mga knee wraps, may mga bench press.
10:02
Nakakatulong sa buhat, so depende sa tao. Iba-iba yung tulong ng mga ganyong mga equipment.
10:10
Now there is a new, not new, 2011 nagstart.
10:14
They call it the raw powerlifting, walang mga knee wraps and bench press.
10:18
They lift less.
10:21
So, yung strongest man title becomes a bit different now.
10:25
Kasi dati, pantay-pantay where you can wear certain equipment.
10:29
Ngayon, there are two formats of powerlifting.
10:33
So, yung sa format ng may mga equipment, my record hasn't been exceeded.
10:41
But, hindi mo na pwedeng sabihing strongest man ngayon because some of those lifting,
10:48
although lower weights sa raw powerlifting, have the potential to lift over what I did before.
10:56
So, that took a long time to do before.
11:00
Kapisa tayo, first in college ako, ituturuan ako ng kuya to, si Patrick.
11:08
And then, noong early 90s, nag-coach naman sa akin si Ramon Rebuque,
11:14
who was also in the national team for a long time.
11:18
And after a few years, I got him to start learning also and using my experience
11:24
that I was able to eventually parang self-coach na
11:28
and pass on the knowledge also to some younger lifters who made the team later on.
11:34
Sir Eddie, malaking factor ba ang edad?
11:38
Kung baga kung isang atleta nagsimula ng maaga o isang atleta,
11:43
meron ba yung effect or factor on the strength of an athlete?
11:49
Meron tayong examples of those who started very late and very young.
11:55
Siguro sa nag-start very late na nag-achieve a lot, napunta sa world level,
12:04
si Anita Corita, believe it or not, she started powerlifting when she was around 48 years old.
12:11
For some people, they think 40 years old.
12:17
But she became very strong and qualified for the international open category.
12:25
Hindi lang masters, but the open category.
12:27
And eventually, nakakuha pangasin ng mga world records sa masters.
12:32
So, never too late.
12:34
Of course, better if you start young.
12:36
So, we have some powerlifters who started even below 10 years old.
12:41
Si Raymond Dibuke, started when he was about 7 years old.
12:47
And later on, went on to win a gold medal in the world championships,
12:52
legal competition years.
12:55
And nakakuha pang vacation record pa.
12:57
So, yung extreme natin. May 7 years old, May 48 years old.
13:02
It's never too late.
13:05
Just get started and just try to be as good as you can.
13:08
Now, for those who started very young, matagal lang,
13:13
you can keep getting stronger and stronger even up to your 40s.
13:18
Most of the people I know, unless they decide to retire early,
13:22
nagpipik sa 40s pa nila.
13:24
So, sino na Reggie Ramirez na 31 years old,
13:27
si Veronica Ompod na 24 years old,
13:31
they have one or two decades pa to keep getting better.
13:35
So, if they're winning medals now in some worlds,
13:37
I expect they will win a lot more for the next 10, 20 years.
13:41
Pero, syempre, may darating pa rin mga bata rin, mga Pilipino,
13:45
na latakas din. Matagalagalag sila.
13:48
Last, Sir Reggie, if you have any upcoming events,
13:52
or if may mensahe kayo sa ating mga promising athletes,
13:55
or those who want to try or do powerlifting,
13:58
this is your chance to invite and give a message.
14:01
Well, one of the latest new things for our MSA,
14:07
yung powerlifting will be in the NCAA Centennial Season Sports Festival.
14:14
So, hindi pa ito regular sport, but it's getting people very excited.
14:19
Then, we will also have the National Bench Press Competitions,
14:27
Championships in December,
14:30
National Interschool Championships sometime in January,
14:35
and then we will have the National Open Age Book Championships in February.
14:42
So, marami tayong mga events na pwedeng salilan.
14:47
Meron din tayong categories for novice, so yung mga first-timers.
14:52
Pwede kayo sumali, kalaban nyo rin, mga first-timers din.
14:55
Then, as you develop, you can start being competitive in the other categories.
15:02
Maraming salamat, Sir Eddie Torres, for your time.
15:06
Ang aga natin ngayong umaga, pero pinaunlakan nyo po kami.
15:09
Thank you, Sir Eddie.
15:11
Okay, thank you. Thank you.
15:13
Wag pa rin na, wag kayong bbq, teammates.
15:16
Marami pa kaming nahihanda sa inyo sa pagpabalikyan ng PTV Sports.
15:22
Maraming salamat, Sir Eddie.
