Students celebrate end of HSC as 2024 ATAR results released in NSW

Nearly 70,000 students were awarded their HSC today, with nearly a quarter scoring 90 or more in at least one subject. Private schools, girls and city students dominated the top marks.

00:00After 13 years of schooling, it all came down to this moment.

00:06Almost 80,000 students logged on this morning to get their HSC results.

00:11I never knew I'd lose more sleep waiting for my mark than doing it in the exam period.

00:18In front of an audience, some students at Western Sydney's Alpha Omega College in

00:22Auburn opened their ATARs needed to get a university place.

00:26Twin brothers Amir and Malik Esar both scored in the high 90s.

00:31I'm an anxiety bomb, so it was just like I kept switching between anxiety and being excited.

00:37Getting a mark like this, it's a blessing to be able to be recognised for all the hard

00:41work it put in.

00:42The class of 2024 marks the largest ever HSC honours roll in New South Wales, with more

00:48than 19,000 students recognised as Distinguished Achievers.

00:51I just got really emotional about it, seeing everything and all the hard work adding up.

00:56The median ATAR this year was 71.55, but for around 20% of students, their final score

01:03carried less weight, having already received their university offers.

01:08And as some celebrate, those left disappointed are reminded to be kind to themselves.

01:14There are so many pathways to get to where you want to get to in the future.

01:17There are sideward steps you can make, there are going to be people that are thrilled with

01:21their results and there are going to be people that may be expected to do a little bit better.

01:25An emotional end to a big year.
