King Charles III is recovering from pancreatic cancer. The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, had her condition discovered after an abdominal surgery. They’re both asking for privacy as they recover.
Second, cancer can affect anyone at any age. Third, a healthy lifestyle isn’t a surefire shield against it. William Shatner was 93 when he was diagnosed. Katie Maccuci was much younger than most lung cancer patients and never smoked, the most common cause of the condition.

Finally, receiving the news is a unique type of grief everyone handles differently. Many celebrities with cancer suffer in private because they don’t want to affect their career or family. Betsey Johnson was worried the world would think she’d never design again. Cynthia Nixon didn’t want paparazzi hounding the hospital as she recovered. Michael C. Hall waited until he couldn’t hide the hair lost from chemotherapy anymore.

Many of the celebrities that do go public inspire each other. Joan Lunden posed for a magazine bald after undergoing chemotherapy. Melissa Etheridge courageously performed on stage bald. It convinced Kathy Bates to reveal her cancer diagnosis.

They’re also an inspiration to us normal people watching from afar. If they can have the strength to reveal and overcome their diagnosis, so can you. They now spread messages of the importance of early treatment and fighting to live no matter what. These are valuable but hard-earned lessons.
