00:00Today truly is a sad day for Madison and for our country.
00:06It is a day that I believe will live in our collective minds for a very,
00:10very long time.
00:12Here are the details.
00:13Today at 1057 AM, our team was called to the Abundant Life
00:18Christian School in reference to an active shooter.
00:24We know that three people are dead, including the suspect shooter.
00:29We know that the suspect shooter was a teenage student who attended the school.
00:35At this time, we're not releasing the age or gender of the student or
00:39any other identifying remarks about the student.
00:44Two other people that died were a teacher and a teenage student.
00:52Six other people were injured.
00:54Two students are now in critical condition in the hospital.
00:59And these injuries are considered life-threatening injuries.
01:04Four students are also at other area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
01:10Many of you have asked me about the why of this.
01:15Why did this happen?
01:17What do we know?
01:17What was the motivation?
01:19I do not know.
01:21But I will tell you this, our detectives are working hard in the investigative
01:26process to find out as many answers as we can.
01:29So that we can further prevent these things from happening,
01:33not only in this community, but in other communities around our country.
01:38I think we can all agree that enough is enough.
01:44And we have to come together to do everything we can to support our students.
01:49To prevent press conferences like these from happening again and again and again.
01:56What kind of gun was used?
01:57We know it was a handgun.
01:59We know a handgun was recovered.
02:02This is an incredibly sad day for our community.
02:06As you've heard, there is no danger to the community at this time.
02:12But our entire community has been impacted by this tragic incident.
02:17On behalf of the Common Council and the City of Madison staff,
02:22I wanna offer our heartfelt condolences to the victims and
02:26families and to the whole Abundant Life community.
02:30I am on record that I think we need to do better in our country and
02:35our community to prevent gun violence.
02:38And I hoped that this day would never come in Madison.
02:42It is not something that any mayor, any fire chief, any police chief,
02:47any person in public office ever wants to have to deal with.
02:52And so I will ask our entire community and our entire country to do whatever we can
02:58to make sure that no public official ever has to stand in this position again.
