00:00The government has reduced their house building targets for the North East and Rachel Reeves,
00:05the Chancellor of Exchequer, has defended the plans saying a major North East regeneration
00:09scheme shows it can be done.
00:11The North East's overall housing target has now jumped from 6,123 under the Conservatives
00:17to 10,976, though that has now been revised down from a 12,182 figure included in Labour's
00:25original proposals earlier this year.
00:29Many have claimed that the new targets are undeliverable while the Conservatives accuse
00:32the government of waging a war on rural England.
00:36Research published by the Centre for Cities think tank last week suggested that even if
00:40house building were to return to peak levels, the government will fall short of its 1.5
00:44million target by at least 388,000 homes come 2029.
00:50Every council in the North East and Tees Valley area will see their housing target increased
00:55except for Newcastle.
