London's Regency Cafe Is Up For Sale

00:00London's famous Regency Café is up for sale.
00:02Since it opened in 1946, the Art Deco-style café has become a cultural touchstone,
00:07known for its traditional cooked breakfast and speedy, no-nonsense service.
00:10It's featured in numerous BBC dramas, movies such as Layer Cake Pride and Rocketman,
00:15an advertising campaign for Volkswagen, and in the Japanese edition of Vogue.
00:20Today, it is a historic example of Italian-British café,
00:24comparable to the likes of Ippoliti in Bethnal Green and Mario's in Kentish Town.
00:29A classic fry-up, with two rashes of bacon, one sausage, a fried egg, beans or tomatoes,
00:33toast and a cup of tea, is still well under a tenner.
00:36Lunch dishes, about £9 each, include spaghetti bolognese, chicken curry,
00:40and, on Fridays, fish and chips.
00:43The listing says the café presents a fantastic opportunity
00:46to take over a well-established, iconic establishment.
00:49The guide price appears remarkably low for such a historic fixture,
00:52not least one in Westminster, where the average house price is close to a million pounds.
00:56The current rent on the property is £29,000 a year,
00:59though this is due for review in December 2025.
01:02Might the landlord go much higher?
01:04But the biggest concern is that the café will fall into the wrong hands
01:07and be spoiled forevermore.
01:08Let's hope not.
