Taiwan's defense ministry says the number of Chinese ships operating close to the country has doubled in the past 24 hours. China is expected to launch military exercises around Taiwan in response to President Lai Ching-te's overseas trip to Pacific allies, which saw him stop twice in U.S. territory.
