An office building home to multiple legal firms on the New South Wales Central Coast has been forced to evacuate after several explosions were heard and a fire broke out. Locals have described a chaotic scene and fears for their safety.

Dozens of staff stream out of this legal aid office in Gosford.

Moments earlier, police say a man entered the building, allegedly lit a fire and fled the scene.

Yeah it was nuts, like it was just, there was cop cars and fire trucks lined up and down all the streets.

A short time later, several explosions rang out at these legal offices down the road.

Witnesses reported seeing someone throw an incendiary device inside.

You wouldn't think that this is your average Thursday in Gosford, that's for sure.

It's definitely crazy, not something that you'd expect.

But also it's sort of, I guess it comes with the territory of courthouses and lawyers and all the rest of it in the area.

A police operation was also underway at the nearby Gosford Uniting Church.

A 54-year-old man was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation.

No other injuries were reported from any of the incidents.

Detectives are searching for a man who was seen in the area at the time of the explosions.

He's believed to be in his 60s, described as being of short and chubby build.
