I don't think we're under any more pressure than I've ever been under being here.
00:04
You know, it's a pressurised situation.
00:06
We spoke about it openly, I've spoke about the challenges here.
00:09
But back to the point, the players have delivered a very good performance.
00:12
I said in the week how proud I am of them.
00:14
I told them first before I told you, and I am.
00:16
You know, they've been through all kinds of challenges here, constantly, as well as I have.
00:20
But sometimes it's tougher for players.
00:22
And I think to come out of it and deliver again is pleasing for them.
00:25
It's only another step.
00:26
We know that.
00:27
You know, there's many more to go.
00:28
But it's a good step.
00:29
And it's a very positive step, I thought, tonight, with the way we went about our business.
00:32
What do you think it says about the players who have produced that after the disappointment?
00:36
It says the same as what I know about them.
00:37
You know, the challenges come thick and fast here.
00:39
For all sorts, on the pitch, off the pitch, all the noise that they have to deal with.
00:43
And they just keep going.
00:45
And they've kept going again tonight.
00:46
But like I say, it's a temporary moment in time because the next one's a big one.
00:50
We know that.
00:50
And every game here is a big one.
00:51
So I might never that.
00:53
But I said, look, enjoy tonight.
00:54
We're in tomorrow, as they know.
00:56
And we'll prep for the next one.
00:57
So the business carries on.
00:58
The work never stops here.
00:59
And that's what I spoke about in the week.
01:01
It's constant hard work from all involved.
01:05
Are you able to talk us through how you set up today?
01:06
Obviously, you had McNeil and Dye out wide in the middle of this time.
01:09
Yeah, just trying to twist and tweak, you know, trying to get the best out of the group,
01:13
trying to be solid enough to keep clean sheets, which we did,
01:16
but also open enough to go and affect the opposition.
01:18
And I thought we found a good balance today.
01:21
It's not always that easy, of course.
01:22
But I thought the commitment to score today was really pleasing.
01:26
The body language to go into the box, the set-piece delivery,
01:29
the commitment of set-pieces to attack the ball, general play.
01:32
We created a number of other chances.
01:34
So very pleased on that side of the game,
01:36
because obviously that's been a big question mark.
01:38
But I did remind the players before about the goal-scoring prowess
01:41
they've shown during their careers, not just here, their previous careers.
01:43
And I said, look, you've got goals in you, lads.
01:45
You've got to go and relax in the box and go and take it on.
01:48
You know, just go and play on the front foot.
01:49
And once it comes in the box, relax is the wrong word,
01:52
but it's just go in there with a focus to score.
01:55
Don't worry about anything else.
01:56
Don't worry about noise.
01:57
Don't worry about corrals.
01:58
Don't worry about the opposition.
01:59
Just go in there and focus on scoring.
02:01
And I thought I was pleased with that.
02:03
And Dominic Cavallin hasn't been credited to have either of those.
02:05
Well, I think as your paper wrote about, you know,
02:07
since I cracked him in his face twice,
02:09
he seems to have had a good performance, as everyone wrote during the week,
02:13
which I did laugh off, but you still ran it.
02:15
I don't know why. Anyway, there you go.
02:17
As you know, that wasn't me.
02:18
I didn't say it was, I just said I think it was your fault.
02:19
Still, Amanda Breuer came on for his debut.
02:22
You looked very good when he came on as well.
02:24
He did. I was really pleased for him.
02:25
He's worked very hard, which I've documented many times.
02:28
And Youssef's a bit behind him, but Youssef's worked hard.
02:30
The two of them have worked really, really hard, actually.
02:33
And I thought he looked sharp.
02:34
I mean, we only really introduced him.
02:35
Nothing to do with anything with the strikers or any of the players.
02:38
It was just to get him involved and it was the right time to do it.
02:41
Police get Harrison a few minutes.
02:42
I was trying to get him on on Saturday just to give him that feeling of what it is.
02:46
Yeah, pleased with that.
02:47
And other players and I were just trying to rest and monitor
02:49
because, obviously, another big game coming.
02:52
Sean, a 4-0 loss on Sunday, followed by a 4-0 win today.
02:56
Now, to find a bit of consistency...
02:58
Well, the consistency hasn't been too bad, actually.
03:01
It's the consistency of winning.
03:02
You know, the consistency of it forming.
03:04
I mean, I think that's our fifth clean sheet in the last nine or whatever it is.
03:07
You can double-check that for me.
03:09
But, you know, the consistency has been there in one degree,
03:12
but we haven't been scoring goals.
03:13
That's been the hardest thing to find consistently and we haven't solved it yet.
03:17
But tonight's a good sign to remind the players
03:19
we can score goals in different ways as well.
03:21
But, no, the overall consistency of what we've done after the first four games,
03:26
I've been pretty pleased with that side of things.
03:28
But goals change everything.
03:29
Goals change all of your opinions, by the way.
03:32
It's not just the outline.
03:33
It's not just the score.
03:34
It's not just what you think of me.
03:35
It's the actual opinions.
03:36
That's what football's like.
03:37
It's one of those strange businesses.
03:40
Aurel Mangala came back into the side, got a good evasion when he came off.
03:45
What do you think of his performance?
03:46
Yeah, I was pleased with him.
03:47
I've generally been pleased with him.
03:49
You know, he knows the game.
03:50
He's mature enough to understand the challenge.
03:53
And I thought he delivered a very good performance.
03:55
Gary O'Neill came in and said Everton didn't do anything complicated.
03:59
It was direct stuff and low-risk.
04:02
Was that sort of going back to basics or was that a fair reflection?
04:04
No, it's up to him to have a decision on what he thinks.
04:07
Every manager has one.
04:09
I was very pleased with the performance because I think it's the best way
04:11
of getting the best out of this group.
04:13
At times, we've probably overplayed, actually, and haven't got the best out of the group.
04:17
Tonight, I thought we used the players that were out there to the best of their ability.
04:21
Good delivery into the box.
04:23
As I said, good intent and desire to score goals.
04:25
Asked a lot of questions of the opposition and opened them up in different ways.
04:28
And I've always said I want a mixed team that can be effective in different ways.
04:32
A mixed team that can play mixed football.
04:33
And I think we've done that tonight to make sure we won.
04:38
Any further questions?
04:43
Sean, just on the set-pieces, I mean, you were so potent last season,
04:46
you haven't scored as many goals maybe so far this season,
04:49
but tonight, what do you think was the big change?
04:54
The commitment to do it, because the analysis,
04:57
the staff take care of the set-pieces, not me, and they do a great job with it.
05:01
Like I said, the delivery was excellent, I must say that,
05:03
across most of the set-pieces, including Young, he's finished.
05:07
So, delivery is a massively important thing in set-pieces,
05:11
and I thought it was excellent tonight,
05:12
but then also the intent and desire to go and finish it,
05:15
and I thought that was pleasing as well.
05:16
So, yeah, I mean, it's just a reminder of how effective we can be tonight.
05:20
Just going into the derby, how important do you think it was having a win?
05:23
And Len, I know the fans saw it, not being on edge going into the game as much...
05:28
Well, the fans are often on edge here.
05:29
That's just the way it is, you know,
05:30
and so I don't know how we can stop that constantly,
05:33
other than winning all the time, obviously.
05:35
But, no, it's good for all.
05:37
You know, the fans have been great, they've stayed with us,
05:39
they travel all over the place, and it's nice to get this night for them.
05:44
But the next one comes quickly, and it's a big one, of course.
05:48
We had to work very hard last season to get the result we did here,
05:50
and we're going to have to do that again.
05:51
They're a fine side and they're in good form, without a doubt.
05:54
OK, thanks, everyone.
05:55
Thanks, everyone.
