Chiu Ching-hui of the Child Welfare League Foundation discusses a survey which suggested parents find Taiwan unfriendly to children — and what Taiwan can do about it.

00:00This isn't the first time your organization has put out this kind of survey.

00:04How do the results this time compare with those in the past?

00:30When I was walking on the street with a pushcart, I still felt very uncomfortable.

00:35I was surprised to find out that Taiwan has been experiencing a lot of minority issues over the past few years.

00:42So we don't have many opportunities to take care of our children or to get in touch with them.

00:52The children around us are crying, and they are more impatient and impatient.

00:58How big, would you say, is this difficulty in taking children out in public

01:03a factor in making people not want to have children?

01:06Most people are not willing to have children because of the cost of parenting.

01:14And the whole society is not very friendly to such a family.

01:32But if the whole society is saying, you won't bark, then don't take it out.

01:37Then it will affect people's decision to have more children.

01:40The government has been trying in recent years to get people to have more children without too much success.

01:45Looking at the results of this survey,

01:47what are some concrete steps you think the government could take to boost the birth rate?

01:51The government's policy in Taiwan is still based on money.

01:57But I have to be honest,

01:58this whole friendly atmosphere in society is not something you can solve by giving your parents money.

02:05So I think it can be done through some drama or some promotion

02:11to let more people know that this is how children develop.

02:15How can we help him?

02:17I think the education of the public is quite important.

02:22Because I have three children myself,

02:25I think I often have some white eyes.

02:29But I have to be honest, when I went abroad, I thought, why don't I have white eyes?
