Floods: Thailand's Hat Yai declared red zone, Jakarta neighbourhoods submerged

Hat Yai municipality in Thailand has been declared a red zone while 51 neighbourhoods in Jakarta, Indonesia were submerged in flood waters when floods struck several parts of Southeast Asia. 00:00Thailand's Hat Yai municipality has been declared a red zone as authorities are mobilized

00:07to help with evacuation and rescue efforts following massive floods in Songkla province.

00:13The municipal government issued warnings on Friday, saying that a massive amount of water

00:18had flown into the Utapau and Wa canals that run through Hat Yai.

00:23The government said overflows from the canals could flood the downtown area of Hat Yai and

00:28the people should move their belongings to higher grounds and prepare for evacuation.

00:34Floods have also inundated other southern provinces, including Yala, Surat Thani and

00:39Satun provinces following heavy downpour since early this week.

00:43Authorities said some 1,884 villages in 50 districts in the southern provinces were underwater.

00:50They said the northeast monsoon prevailing over the Gulf of Thailand and the south was

00:55expected to strengthen, while an active low-pressure cell over the South China Sea would move through

01:00Malaysia into the Andaman Sea.

01:03In Indonesia, the nation's capital was also not spared by floods.

01:08Reports said that some 51 neighborhoods in Jakarta were submerged in floodwater and water

01:13levels reached 2.6 meters in the worst-hit areas.

01:17The floods also continued to hit Medan, where regional elections in some areas were disrupted

01:22on Wednesday.

01:24Same weather is expected in Indonesia towards the end of the year, as the Lanina phenomenon

01:29increases rainfalls across the tropical archipelago.

01:33Rescue personnel conducted operations in the north Sumatra province looking for passengers

01:38trapped in a minibus buried in mud and other victims after flash floods and landslides

01:43hit Sibalanget district.

01:49The landslides and floods since last week have killed at least 27 people.
