03:07With just under 23% of the vote after nearly all ballots were counted, Djordjescu was ahead.

03:15Most local surveys predicted he would win less than 10% of the vote.

03:21Laskony, of the Progressive Save Romania Union Party, followed with just over 19%.

03:28She beat the incumbent prime minister, who resigned as leaders of the Establishment PSD

03:38The second round of the vote will be held on December 8th.

03:47At least 23 people have been injured in a Russian daytime attack on Kharkiv, according

03:52to its regional governor.

03:54The 8.30am attack targeted a central, densely populated residential area, said Kharkiv's

04:03Local authorities reported damaged residential houses as a result of the strike.

04:12The centre of Odessa was also targeted by a Russian daytime attack, injuring at least

04:1711 people.

04:19Ukraine's air defences reported to have downed 50 of 73 Russian drones launched during overnight

04:26attacks, dozens of them targeting Zaporozhye.

04:39In Russia, Kursk's governor reported on his Telegram channel that air defences destroyed

04:44seven Ukrainian missiles overnight over the region.

04:48Russian forces captured a British mercenary named James Scott Rees, who was fighting with

04:53the Ukrainian army in Russia's Kursk region, a security source told Russian state news

04:58agency.

05:04Olaf Scholz has been officially nominated by his Social Democratic Party as its candidate

05:09for German Chancellor, ahead of snap elections in February.

05:13Scholz is the current German Chancellor, but there were weeks of tense discussions within

05:17his party over whether he was the right person for the job.

05:22His ruling traffic light coalition, compromised of the Social Democratic Party, the Greens

05:26and the Liberal Free Democratic Party, collapsed earlier this month after he fired his finance

05:32minister.

05:33Lacking a parliamentary majority, Scholz agreed to hold a no-confidence vote in December,

05:38with general elections set for the 23rd of February 2025.

05:44Some Social Democrats had rallied around German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, who enjoys

05:49higher approval ratings as a replacement for Scholz.

05:53Pistorius said he wasn't available to run for Chancellor last week, paving the way for

05:57Scholz at the top of the party's ballot.

06:04France's far-right leader Marine Le Pen warned she might topple France's minority government

06:09by the end of the year if the budget bill isn't changed, threatening a confidence motion.

06:15Le Pen said she expressed red lines, including a refusal to raise electricity taxes and the

06:21need to increase state pensions from January.

06:25Conservative Prime Minister Michel Barnier's cabinet is forced to rely on the far-right's

06:31goodwill to be able to stay in power.

06:33Barnier's cabinet is mostly composed of members of his Republican party and centrists from

06:38President Emmanuel Macron's alliance.

06:42The budget bill for next year must be passed by December 21.

06:48Last month, the government survived a confidence vote brought by the left-wing coalition because

06:54the far-right group abstained from voting.

06:57Homes and businesses have been flooded as storm Burt continues to batter communities

08:58The Commission warns the presence of spy ships indicates the obtaining of communications.
