Gia Manek: The woman beyond Gopi Bahu

She became a household name as Gopi bahu. But actor Gia Manek told Brut why it’s “important for people to look at you beyond that.” She will now be seen opposite Rajpal Yadav in “Kaam Chalu Hai”.

00:03I'm in the mall in my jeans and they're like very shocked.

00:10So I said, hello.

00:11I've had many ladies meet me in the mall and say that,

00:14you know, for my son, I would love to have a bahu like, you know, you Jia.

00:19Hi, this is Jia for Brute.

00:20I'm extremely grateful that I've been a part of an iconic show,

00:30that even after almost a decade of doing it,

00:34the scenes, a few portions of the show still keep going viral.

00:39And not a particular scene, but different scenes going

00:43viral at different intervals.

00:46And not only that, even the background music going viral.

00:50So I just look at it as a blessing.

00:52But having said that, being in the present moment,

00:56I would say kaam chalu hai is the moment.

00:58And I would want kaam chalu hai and the message in kaam chalu hai to go viral.

01:04Because if this goes viral, we can make an impact together.

01:10It's very important for people to look at you beyond that,

01:13because I'm an actor by profession.

01:16And it is my job to put life into a character that has been given to me.

01:21And I'm not limited.

01:23There is a vast difference between Jia and Gopi.

01:26As Jia, I am nothing like Gopi.

01:29I am nowhere even close to your surprise.

01:36People who are in my inner circle, they know what a brat I am.

01:42Even women who meet me in the malls, when they look at me and say,

01:46Arey Gopi bahu, the way I talk to them, they are in for a shock.

01:50What? Really?

01:52And sometimes, even professionally, I have experienced people approaching me for work

01:59and they kind of expect me to answer like Gopi or to act like Gopi.

02:05And I end up being myself as Jia, which takes them aback.

02:11You know, they don't look comfortable because they feel that,

02:15you know, we are going to be talking to Gopi bahu.

02:19And, you know, we'll be able to kind of take her for a ride,

02:22just like how her sister used to take her for a ride in the show.

02:26So when that taking for a ride doesn't happen,

02:28people kind of get a little offended that,

02:31Oh, we thought this would be easy.

02:33But no, it's not like that.

02:35So there is a vast difference.

02:37I've had many ladies meet me in the mall and say that,

02:39you know, for my son, I would love to have a bahu like you, Jia.

02:44So I said, wait, are you referring to Gopi or are you referring to Jia?

02:48Because Jia is nothing like Gopi.

02:50So if you are saying I want a bahu like you,

02:53then you are in for a surprise.

02:54I'm nothing like that.

02:55So see what you're wishing for.

02:58So this is one thing.

02:59And of course, I'm in the mall in my jeans and they're like very shocked.
