Christmas. The cost of living crisis is a very real worry for many locals, and as the festive season approaches events such as Christmas parties, balls, visits to Santa and Christmas meals will be hitting the purses of bristolians

00:00This Christmas, obviously loads of prices for things have gone up. Are you scaling back this Christmas?

00:06No, to be honest. No, I don't really tend to spend that much over Christmas anyway.

00:13So I've got quite a small family, so no is the answer.

00:17Not massively, but I think everyone's feeling a little bit of a pinch.

00:21So we will still be doing all the normal stuff, but not massively, no.

00:27Yes, I'm technically cutting back this year.

00:30So my family started doing a secret Santa a couple of years ago,

00:34and it means that instead of buying seven presents, I buy one.

00:37So it's probably better for the environment, but it also just costs less.

00:41With Christmas often comes time to spend money on social activities

00:47such as staff Christmas parties and friend gatherings.

00:50So many locals are finding cheaper alternatives,

00:54including visiting Christmas markets and visiting Christmas lights.

00:59But are locals scaling back for their socialising this winter?

01:09your Christmas parties have gone up this year?

01:12Yeah, everything seems to have gone up a bit. It's not a...

01:16Yeah, it's not a small consideration.

01:20I think it's everyone's feeling that it's noticeable.

01:24Even just the cost of sort of general basics has gone up.

01:27So just the cost of like the Christmas dinner has gone up by sort of a sum.

01:34I haven't noticed it yet.

01:36I have noticed that people are really reluctant to pay up front to do a Christmas do.

01:40And so basically attendance at the work Christmas do this year is going to be really low,

01:44which is a bit of a shame because I like Christmasy events,

01:47but ideally we'd like one that's free.

01:51Yeah, definitely. Prices for everything are going up.

01:54So I think, yeah, definitely need to be a little bit more aware.

01:57But yeah.
