00:00I've never been one to be quiet about the fact that I'm Latina.

00:04I think it's important.

00:06I never put the kind of responsibility on my shoulders of role model or anything,

00:10but I do feel I have a responsibility.

00:13I have a responsibility to represent myself, my family, my culture in the best way that I can.

00:30I do this not for an award.

00:37No, I do this to connect with people and make them feel things because I want to feel something.

00:44It was at the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club in my old neighborhood up in the Bronx,

01:01where I was introduced to the performing arts.

01:04It's where I first sang, first danced, and performed for an audience.

01:14Coming all the way from Bronx, New York, Miss Jennifer Lopez.

01:44But as far as for Latino actors in Hollywood, it's not that great,

01:58because we're not considered for roles that are not Latino,

02:03but meanwhile other people are considered to play our roles who are not Latino,

02:07so it's a weird thing.

02:09I started making records in the 90s, in the 80s,

02:38in the 90s, in the era of the waif and the supermodel.

02:41And slowly as curves began to be embraced,

02:43the girl who wanted to combine street style with couture began to blossom.

03:09I'm not one to really follow trends,

03:13but I kind of was just influenced from who I was from the time I was very young and living in the Bronx.

03:38Ugly, vicious shit was written about her in ways that if you wrote it now,

03:49you would literally be fired.

03:51Yeah.

04:22It is my greatest hope that our efforts with Amnesty International

04:27will encourage other people throughout the world to act,

04:30ensuring that finally justice will be served.

04:51Today, this landmark moment inspires me to work harder and dream bigger for all that is the future.

05:07I'm really grateful for her friendship, her generosity, which is huge,

05:12for showing the world the beauty of booty

05:19and making it easier for a whole lot of girls to love theirs, including me.

06:20When I think of my daughter, when I think of all the little girls of the world,

06:25to be able to have that, to see that two Latinas doing this at this time,

06:30in this country at this time, it's just it's just very empowering for us.
