He’s behind one of Hollywood’s best-kept secrets: the prosthetic penis. Meet Matthew Mungle ...

00:00We were doing the prosthetics for Harold and Kumar escape from Guantanamo Bay.
00:07And they wanted a penis that was extremely small, but had a lot of hair.
00:30From then on, it's just been, I'm kind of slightly known as the penis guy,
00:36fortunately or unfortunately. To me, if you own a lab, if you do prosthetics,
00:41then you accept any challenge that you can, because that's the fun about it.
00:47That's the creative flow that an artist has as a makeup artist.
00:59That was a big one. And of course it had a little Prince Albert in it.
01:04Sometimes they want a larger penis on the actor. And sometimes it's for the comfort
01:13of the actor too. Because sometimes they can do a scene without thinking about,
01:22oh, I'm showing my own penis. So, they can just forget about that part and do their acting.
01:28The majority of the time, it's about the size of the penis or the testicles, etc., etc.
01:35that a production or director wants to utilize in the film or television production.
01:43This is basically the workshop that I work in. This is where I do most of my lab work,
02:08sculpting over here. I mold it in silicone and then turn around and mold it in a platinum silicone,
02:17which is much, much more skin safe than a tin silicone. Now, the silicone I pour in is rather
02:23thick and I can color it any color I want. And depending on what the actor's skin tone is,
02:31I usually pour that in and slush it out. So, the penis is heavier on the end of the penis
02:41and hollow further up. So, the actor's real penis can go into that little sheath.
02:48This is a room I do silicone appliances. And silicone appliances are great because,
02:56of course, they're translucent. This is a forehead that I did for an actor.
03:13It's very flexible and very realistic like skin. It's attached to the actor so the actor
03:21can do his scene or whatever he has to do, run or jump or be in a jacuzzi, whatever they need to do.
03:29And of course, I had to make testicles, just testicles, not a penis for stepbrothers. So,
03:36Will Ferrell could pull it out of his pants and rub it against the drum of the other actors.
03:44That's the magic of it, I think, is to make it so realistic
03:48that nobody knows that it's actually a real or not a real penis.
04:06Here's some heads left over from a project I did called Salem for three seasons on television.
04:12And it's my playground. One of my big actresses I worked with is Glyn Close. And she loves to
04:24change her look subtly. So, I do teeth for her. I do noses. I do earlobes, ears, full ears for
04:34Albert Knobbs, for Hillbilly Elegy. We've achieved our goal as prosthetic or makeup artists.
04:42If you don't see our work, I mean, I love to hear that somebody watched a film and they didn't
04:50notice that it was Glyn Close in the film until about 30 minutes into the film.
