Alabama pauses lethal injections

Alabama has put a pause on executions after another failed lethal injection.

00:00Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has ordered a pause on executions after there was a third failed

00:05lethal injection. So what exactly happened and what comes next? Brute can explain in less than

00:0960 seconds. Attorneys for 57 year old Kenneth Eugene Smith said their client was strapped to

00:14a gurney for hours as he awaited his execution. Officials who cited issues finding a vein then

00:20called off the execution because it couldn't be carried out before the death warrant expired.

00:24This marked an unprecedented third failed execution in the state since 2018. In the

00:30aftermath Ivey called for the Department of Corrections to do a top to bottom review of

00:34the state's execution process. She went on to say that legal tactics and criminals hijacking the

00:39system are at play here but did not go as far as to blame prison officials or law enforcement.

00:44The Alabama Department of Corrections replied via a statement saying it had no concerns about

00:49the state's ability to carry out future lethal injection procedures but will continue to review

00:54its processes as it routinely does following each execution to identify areas of improvement.
