00:00Unrelenting rainfall in the United States, India, Japan, China and Turkey has caused

00:05destructive flash flooding. And many scientists believe as Earth continues to heat up,

00:09the warmer atmosphere will lead to more frequent and severe storms across the planet.

00:14President Joe Biden approved the state of Vermont's emergency declaration,

00:18where some officials have said the current flooding is worse than levels brought on by

00:22the deadly Hurricane Irene in 2011. Others in New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island are also

00:28battling flooding that has washed away roads, submerged vehicles and prompted emergency rescues.

00:34In India, monsoon rains have caused catastrophic landslides and flash floods,

00:39killing at least 15 people. Regions of Japan are also suffering from rainfall,

00:43which has caused mudslides and floods that have killed at least two people.

00:47Flooding also caused landslides in a southwestern region of China,

00:51resulting in the deaths of at least 15 people. And in Turkey, heavy rains caused a riverbank

00:56to burst, leading to intense flooding that required a helicopter rescue for those trapped

01:01by the quickly rising waters. The atmosphere, which holds more and more moisture the warmer

01:06it gets, can produce more frequent and deadly storms as the planet continues to heat up.

01:11While climate change itself does not directly cause the storms, the increased temperatures

01:16on Earth form more favorable conditions to create more severe and fatal weather events.
