The man who shot and killed three people at the University of Virginia last night is in custody,

police announced during a live press conference.

We just received information the suspect is in custody.

Police identified the suspect as ex-football player Chris Jones.

The 22-year-old opened fire on a bus after a school field trip,

killing three other football players, Devin Chandler,

Lavelle Davis Jr., and Deshawn Perry, and injuring two other students.

The shooting prompted an overnight shelter in place,

with some students having to spend the night in libraries and classrooms.

Campus police say Jones was investigated back in September

after someone reported him for making comments about owning a gun.

Police followed up with his roommate, however, who did not report seeing a weapon.
