UK reports highest growth rate in permanent migration among OECD countries

In 2023, Britain was first in terms of the number of migrants that settled to the country permanently relative to its population. In terms of the total number of new arrivals in OECD countries, it was second only to the US.

00:00Permanent migration to OECD countries is at an all-time high.

00:09Over 6.5 million people moved permanently to OECD countries in 2023. The number,

00:18which doesn't include Ukrainians under temporary protection, is the highest on record and a 10%

00:25rise from 2022. The US is the top destination with 1.2 million new legal permanent residents.

00:34The UK rose to second place with an unprecedented 750,000 new arrivals, a remarkable 52% increase

00:45from 2022, the highest among OECD members. Germany is third, followed by Canada, Poland,

00:54Spain and France. With the exception of Ukrainians, Indians accounted for the largest

01:00nationality moving to OECD countries, followed by Chinese, Russians and Romanians. Most people

01:09move because of family reasons and for work, most of them are employed in mining and manufacturing.

01:1617% of them on average are self-employed and in two-thirds of OECD countries,

01:24they're more likely to be self-employed than the local population.
