In our interview this morning, we will talk about the companies and collaborations of the Ministry of Energy or Department of Energy
00:08
that is promoting energy efficiency and conservation in every Filipino household.
00:14
Let's find out their projects, programs, and companies together with Director Patrick Aquino,
00:19
CESO 3, Director 4 of the Energy Utilization Management Bureau of the Department of Energy.
00:24
Good morning to you, sir.
00:27
Good morning to our viewers listening here in Rise and Shine, Philippines.
00:32
All right, Director Patrick, how is the campaign of the Department of Energy different this year
00:37
compared to the previous campaigns of your DOE agency?
00:42
Well, our new program is what we call You Have the Power, Energy Efficiency Starts With You.
00:49
Recently, we introduced you to the Madiskarte family.
00:54
This is the family of Binibining Binlen and Ginuong Bayan Madiskarte
01:02
who are fighting for action and happiness.
01:06
The purpose of our program, we started it in a campus caravan in our schools
01:12
with the help of the Presidential Communications Office or PCO
01:17
where we want our students to learn the practices to be efficient in using electricity.
01:25
They will look at the appliances that they don't use.
01:28
They will fill them up.
01:30
They will shift to more energy-efficient things.
01:34
That is what we are doing, ma'am.
01:37
Sometimes, you can see on our websites, we also have a comic strip
01:43
that shows the Madiskarte tips that our Madiskarte family is doing.
01:49
So, that is our new program.
01:52
This is also an opportunity, in accordance with the directive of our President Marcos Jr.,
01:58
to look at energy efficiency.
02:01
Now, during Christmas, we buy appliances, right?
02:05
That is why it is time for those who have bonuses,
02:08
if we are going to buy, we should choose a high energy start or high energy efficiency rating.
02:14
Okay. What other activities are the DOE and the PCO doing
02:20
as part of the implementation of this campaign, You Have The Power, Director?
02:26
Yeah. Aside from the campus caravan that we did,
02:30
not only here in NCR, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao,
02:33
we also held events to air our comic strips, animation, and short films.
02:41
We also held a contest where the output of our comic strips, short video films,
02:48
and posters were made by our youth from our K-12 program.
02:55
Aside from this, we also helped our private sector.
03:00
There is also a mall caravan component.
03:03
Our goal is to reach the women of Ilaw ng Tahanan,
03:08
and our fellow countrymen,
03:11
to let them know the things that can help them.
03:16
If you practice energy efficiency,
03:18
to be more efficient in using energy,
03:21
not only will your expenses be lower in electricity or gasoline,
03:26
what's more important is that our budget will be wider.
03:29
That is our main goal to tell our fellow countrymen.
03:34
We need to be a family to be discarded.
03:38
How can an ordinary Filipino be included here
03:42
and support the initiatives of the government
03:45
regarding energy efficiency and conservation, sir?
03:49
Our reminder is very simple.
03:53
I won't repeat it.
03:55
We're just tired of repeating it.
03:57
But our reminder is simple.
03:59
First of all, when we're at home,
04:01
let's turn off the appliances.
04:03
If we're not using it,
04:05
let's turn it off.
04:07
If it's power-stripped, let's switch it off.
04:10
We have appliances that we don't know are still consuming
04:14
when there's electricity.
04:16
That's called a vampire load.
04:18
If we're not really using it,
04:20
let's turn it off or switch off the appliances.
04:23
Second, we have a bonus.
04:26
If you have an investment to make,
04:28
if we're going to buy electricity,
04:30
let's buy a light-emitting diode or LED.
04:33
If we're going to buy a refrigerator,
04:35
let's buy an inverter-type one
04:37
or an air-conditioner.
04:39
Then, let's clean our filters,
04:42
let's maintain our air-con and electric fan.
04:46
These are the biggest items
04:48
when it comes to our homes
04:50
that are consuming energy.
04:53
The best thing for us is to practice.
04:56
Let's not forget,
04:58
when we're going out,
05:00
for example, in our room,
05:02
let's make sure that if we're not going back right away,
05:05
all the appliances that we're not going to use,
05:08
let's switch them off.
05:10
Energy efficiency is free
05:12
if you think about it
05:15
and this is an opportunity
05:17
to make it a way of life
05:19
that we do every day.
05:21
Let's make it a habit.
05:23
What are the main challenges
05:25
that DOE faces
05:27
in promoting energy efficiency to Filipinos?
05:30
How do you plan to address this
05:32
through your campaigns, sir?
05:36
The main challenge that we see
05:39
is the awareness
05:41
of our fellow Filipinos
05:44
because when we go out,
05:46
especially when we're traveling,
05:48
whether we're going to school
05:50
or to establishments,
05:52
they don't realize
05:54
that the appliances have standby power,
05:57
there are technologies like inverters
06:00
that are more efficient.
06:02
The first thing that our fellow Filipinos see
06:05
when it comes to energy-efficient technologies
06:08
is that it's a bit more expensive.
06:10
That's what we're saying.
06:12
In the beginning, it's expensive
06:14
but when we operate it,
06:16
it's cheaper.
06:18
So when it comes to our operational costs,
06:21
it's more than double.
06:23
Sometimes, the payback is fast.
06:25
That's why it's worth investing here.
06:28
Those are just practical tips
06:30
that will greatly reduce your bill.
06:33
When it comes to renewable energy,
06:35
electric vehicles are increasing.
06:37
Why is it advisable to use them, sir?
06:41
Our beloved President said,
06:44
if you can remember,
06:46
last first semester of our country,
06:49
he signed an executive order
06:51
that will greatly reduce the cost
06:53
to update, I mean,
06:55
the cost to own our electric vehicles.
06:57
He expanded the coverage
06:59
of import tariff suspension.
07:01
So if you look at the market,
07:03
there are more electric vehicles
07:05
that our fellow Filipinos can afford.
07:08
But the primary reason
07:10
why we want to switch to electric vehicles
07:12
is that unlike when we run on oil,
07:16
electric vehicles can run on renewable energy.
07:21
It will help our energy independence,
07:24
energy security,
07:26
and more importantly,
07:28
when we use battery electric vehicles,
07:30
it has no emissions.
07:32
It's quiet.
07:34
It's safer.
07:36
And the cost to operate per kilometer,
07:39
it's a huge advantage
07:41
if we compare it to cars
07:43
that run on diesel,
07:45
or gasoline,
07:47
or oil products.
07:49
That's what we're telling our fellow Filipinos.
07:51
Now, ma'am, you might ask
07:53
what we're arguing about
07:55
aside from thinking that
07:57
the upfront cost of our electric vehicles
07:59
is expensive.
08:01
What our fellow Filipinos are thinking
08:03
is that they don't have to charge for it.
08:05
They don't have to refill it
08:07
because there's not a lot of gasoline
08:09
in our electric vehicle charging stations.
08:11
What we're telling our fellow Filipinos
08:14
is that most electric vehicles
08:16
are bundled.
08:18
And based on your daily usage,
08:22
you can do overnight charging.
08:24
You just need a lot of public chargers
08:28
if your route is flooded.
08:31
Just like our logistics
08:33
and public transport sector.
08:35
But if you're an ordinary user
08:37
like me, like you, ma'am,
08:39
you can easily top up at home.
08:42
And we can also see
08:44
our malls and business establishments
08:46
that have a lot of charging stations.
08:48
Some of them are free.
08:50
If you want to see where the charging stations are
08:52
and the free charging stations,
08:54
you can visit
08:56
evindustry.ph.
08:58
Okay, one last thing.
09:00
What is your message or call to action
09:02
to our viewers?
09:04
Go ahead, sir.
09:06
Thank you very much.
09:08
Our National Energy Consciousness Month
09:10
is coming up next month.
09:12
Our fellow Filipinos
09:14
are reminding us
09:16
that you have the power.
09:18
Energy efficiency starts with you.
09:20
Let's work together for a new Philippines.
09:22
Well, truly, you have the power.
09:24
We have the power.
09:26
Thank you very much, Director Patrick,
09:28
for sharing your projects and campaigns
09:30
for the Department of Energy.
