One of the first ideas we had is like this guy was gonna be obsessed with having a bigger ass.
00:06
I was like in fact a little like jealous to be fair.
00:09
There's something about sitting down with an actual butt that is very comfortable.
00:17
Hello everyone, I'm Diego Luna.
00:20
My name is Gael Garcia Bernal and Esquire has asked us to explain some things.
00:26
So we're just gonna explain something.
00:28
Yeah.
00:35
What is the secret to your long-lasting friendship?
00:38
It's a secret.
00:42
Let me ask you one thing.
00:43
Anything you guys disagree on?
00:45
Yeah.
00:46
What is that?
00:46
Diego doesn't like avocado.
00:48
But I've never liked it.
00:50
It's not that I changed my mind or anything.
00:52
This is a 44 year thing.
00:56
I don't like avocados.
00:57
I don't know what to say.
00:58
I don't know what to say with that.
00:59
I don't support that argument.
01:03
You love avocados.
01:05
Yeah, I think avocados should be president.
01:08
Yeah.
01:12
Thank you Gael for not telling us your secret and for putting me in this spot.
01:17
Thank you very much.
01:19
Okay, Diego is in Star Wars.
01:21
And Gael is a part of Marvel.
01:22
Have you tried to get the other into your universe?
01:25
No.
01:26
That would be really weird.
01:27
That would be really pushing it.
01:29
No, that would be like...
01:30
Not like going into hyperspace or anything.
01:32
Exactly, exactly.
01:33
Not so realistic.
01:34
Like, hey, what are you doing here?
01:36
But now like, I don't know, like a piece for like a comedy central kind of thing.
01:41
We could do something of...
01:43
Or in 50 years when like...
01:45
When they are there.
01:46
When no one calls us.
01:47
We can do something.
01:48
We can be like wearing the clothes, being really old and pretending like...
01:53
Exactly.
01:54
There was a moment where they actually...
01:56
But they would be fighting together, no?
01:58
They would be...
01:58
For the same cause, of course.
02:00
Absolutely, absolutely.
02:02
I don't think they will fight.
02:03
I think Andor would try to get away.
02:05
But Andor would bring his droid.
02:08
That's the thing that we have to acknowledge.
02:11
That there's a gigantic thing that would get in between.
02:14
Yeah, the werewolf.
02:16
He's not responsible for his actions.
02:18
Let's say he's like that friend that has really bad alcohol.
02:22
No?
02:22
Next day he's like, what?
02:24
What happened?
02:25
So I don't know...
02:26
Why are you looking at me like...
02:29
Was it obvious which role was meant for each of you on La Maquina?
02:34
Yes, yes, definitely.
02:36
I am very open to injections.
02:40
Gael is afraid of needles.
02:43
So I was like, yeah, I'll play that.
02:45
I'll take the hit.
02:46
And Gael is good at taking hits also.
02:49
He likes being punched.
02:50
He likes to suffer.
02:51
He likes the pain.
02:53
And tight shorts.
02:54
I mean, short shorts, not tight.
02:56
Gael had been training boxing for years.
02:59
And I was happy not to wake up too early.
03:02
So I think it was pretty clear.
03:05
I'll tell you everything about the fake bot.
03:07
One of the first ideas we had is like,
03:10
this guy was going to be obsessed with having a bigger ass.
03:13
As big as it would look natural to him.
03:16
It's basically this padded pants that he wears.
03:20
And it was quite fascinating to put that on.
03:24
Because it suddenly, like, it brings a character naturally.
03:27
Like, it just makes you stand differently.
03:29
It's like, I was like, in fact, a little like jealous, to be fair.
03:34
It's like, oh, this is kind of nice.
03:36
And it's right.
03:37
There's something about sitting down with an actual bot
03:43
that is very comfortable that I miss now.
03:47
But yeah, I had to let go because the series is a mini series.
03:51
So it has a beginning and an end.
03:53
It's a character that it's gone with his ass and all the prosthetics.
03:59
Yeah.
04:01
So Diego, what are you most excited for in Andor Season 2?
04:04
You want me to answer that?
04:06
Exactly. Thank you.
04:07
If you can help me, I mean, I can't talk about it.
04:10
But you can talk about it.
04:13
You don't have a contract or anything.
04:15
I am very excited.
04:16
We've been working really hard.
04:18
It's four years.
04:19
Like, the first season was one year.
04:21
This one is four years in the life of these characters.
04:24
And there's new characters.
04:25
And so, yeah, it's an exciting one.
04:28
But I can't say much.
04:30
You can't say much.
04:31
I apologize, you know, but I can't say much.
04:34
But I can be back next year to talk about it.
04:37
If there's a chance.
04:40
I can bring my own chair.
04:41
If this one is still like this.
04:43
I think you will have to.
04:45
Yeah.
04:45
Yeah.
04:46
Because this chair is still going to be here.
04:48
Why was it important to you both to tell the story in La Máquina?
04:52
It was important for many reasons.
04:54
I think the most important one was to have an opportunity to reflect on friendship.
05:01
But with characters our age, you know, because it changes a lot.
05:05
And we had the opportunity to do something similar in Y Tu Mamá También,
05:09
in Rudy Cursi.
05:11
And for me, it was important to keep reflecting on something that unites us, you know, and do that.
05:18
While we still have time to talk about this moment, you know.
05:22
People have been waiting for years to see you two back together on screen.
05:26
What drew you both to reunite for La Máquina?
05:28
It was definitely the love for what we do.
05:32
The idea of acting together again after so many years, which is so much fun.
05:39
It's just like there's something very special when we work together.
05:42
And we wanted to make sure we went through that again.
05:45
We also wanted to make sure we could do a story that would celebrate Mexico,
05:49
that would celebrate boxing and friendship.
05:53
And that would give us the opportunity to work with an amazing group of people
05:57
that we've been working with for decades now.
05:59
How did Y Tu Mamá También push the boundaries of cinema?
06:03
Do we agree that Y Tu Mamá También pushed boundaries of cinema?
06:07
I think we can agree, especially in those days.
06:10
The fact that this very fresh story that is a comedy, but at the same time is a tragedy.
06:16
And that it has those elements of awakening and the loss of innocence and all of those
06:21
combined with the fact that there was a map that very few people had seen in the world.
06:27
I mean, and also for us, it was very difficult to reflect on all this
06:29
because we hadn't made those type of films.
06:32
And obviously the sexuality, which...
06:34
Oh, I thought you were going to say the great acting.
06:36
Sensuality.
06:37
No, it is the great acting, exactly.
06:39
When the film is honest and has a purpose, there's always someone out there
06:43
that will be ready to receive that and make it theirs, no?
06:47
What was it like working with Alejandro on Amores Perros?
06:51
And how did it influence you as an actor?
06:54
Well, I mean, it was my first experience in cinema.
06:57
I also was Alejandro González Signari's first experience in cinema.
07:01
I'm doing that voice because he talks a little bit like that.
07:05
It was many of us in that film.
07:08
It was our first experience working on cinema.
07:11
And back in those days, we didn't know that the films were going to be seen.
07:15
There were only six films done that year in Mexico.
07:18
Now reflecting back on it, we knew what we were, the story we were telling,
07:22
but we didn't know the consequences at all.
07:24
Having that opportunity to always remember that innocence in a way or that instinct.
07:29
Back in those days, we didn't have any references if this was the correct thing,
07:33
the right thing to do.
07:34
And it came out good.
07:36
What advice would you give to the next generation of Latino storytellers?
07:41
The advice I would give is to behave badly.
07:44
Rebel on the established narrative and break it.
07:49
If we fall into the trap of like, this is the stories that we are able to tell,
07:55
then I don't know.
07:56
It's not interesting.
07:57
I would also add, make sure you see the projects that kind of like represent that.
08:02
Be curious about what others are doing and how they're doing it.
08:05
We send a message every time we buy a ticket for a theater play.
08:11
We watch a film, we click on the platform.
08:14
Make sure you're sending the message, the right message,
08:17
and you connect with those who are being rebellious,
08:22
independent, brave enough to tell stories.
08:26
Thank you so much for watching.
08:27
And thank you, Esquire, for making our answers sound logical and...
08:32
And brief.
08:32
Make sense and brief. Yes, exactly.
08:34
Please edit this brief.
08:36
Thank you very much for watching this.
