River bank restoration for Tyne and Wear

Groundwork NE and Cumbria have submitted planning permission with both Newcastle and Sunderland councils to restore the banks of the rivers Tyne and Wear .

00:00Groundwork North East in Cumbria has applied to both Newcastle and Sunderland Councils for planning permission for two projects

00:06that will help to protect and restore the natural habitats of the banks of the Tyne and Wear.

00:10Specialist marine and ecological contractors appointed by Groundwork North East in Cumbria

00:15plan to install brushwood bundles secured with chestnut stakes along the foreshore.

00:19The installation and planting should slow the river flow, remove sediment and allow for mud, sand and silt to build up, burying the structures,

00:26which will eventually become part of the riverbank, providing homes for fish, crabs and other marine life in the new saltmarsh.

00:32Nature restoration can help repair centuries of heavy industrialisation by restoring biodiversity

00:38and reinstate natural saltmarsh habitats on the remaining exposed areas of the riverbank.

00:43Rebecca O'Connell, Environment Programme Team Leader for the Environment Agency in the North East, said

00:49In England we have lost over 85% of our saltmarsh, 50% of our sea grassland, 5% of our native oyster reefs.

00:56With the loss of habitats comes a loss of valuable benefits and ecosystems.
