We will seek to find common ground with Donald Trump.
00:03
He will make his own decisions about what he wants to do.
00:05
I obviously want him to stay in the Paris climate agreement,
00:08
but that's his decision.
00:10
He's been elected by the US people.
00:14
But we will work with him and seek that common ground.
00:17
How are you going to persuade him, though?
00:19
How do you build a relationship with a man who you described
00:22
in the past as a racist, misogynistic, self-confessed
00:26
groper?
00:31
Look, I said things in the past.
00:35
My job now as a government minister
00:37
is to work with the new US administration.
00:40
Donald Trump's done lots of tweets in his time as well.
00:44
I think what he will be interested in
00:46
is serving the mandate from the American people.
00:50
What we're interested in is serving the mandate
00:52
from the British people.
00:53
And the British people have elected
00:55
us to drive forward with this clean energy transition.
00:59
We set out a clear manifesto saying
01:01
we thought this was in our national economic interest
01:04
to drive this forward, and the right thing
01:06
for future generations as well.
01:08
We will stand up for the values that we believe in
01:11
and the mandate on which we were elected.
01:13
No doubt Donald Trump will do the same.
01:16
And we will seek out that common ground.
01:17
I'm sure there is common ground that we can find.
01:20
And just to make this one other point,
01:22
the Kyoto Agreement of 1997 was not, in the end,
01:25
ratified by the United States.
01:27
Donald Trump came out of the Paris Agreement in 2017.
01:31
But the world carried on.
01:33
The world carried on moving.
01:35
And so, of course, the US election results
01:37
are highly relevant to these discussions here this week.
01:41
But I think the reality is that this
01:44
is an unstoppable transition because
01:46
of the economics of this transition,
01:48
as well as countries realising the threat climate poses.
01:51
And you need to look at the tragic events in Spain
01:54
to know why we need to act.
