Taiwan's Real Wages See Modest Growth Through September

Taiwan's average wages increased by just under half a percent when accounting for inflation in the first nine months of 2024, government figures say.

00:00Average wages here in Taiwan have barely grown faster than inflation this year, according to new government data.

00:06Taiwan's statistics agency reports average monthly salaries of about 1,400 U.S. dollars in the first nine months of this year.

00:14That's up just under half a percent in real terms.

00:17Now, without factoring in inflation, wages in the lowest 10th percentile, about 850 U.S. dollars per month,

00:23saw 4 percent growth, mostly due to a rise in the minimum wage.

00:27Wages in the 90th percentile, about 2,300 U.S. dollars and above, saw less than 3 percent growth.

00:34Low-wage workers, classified as those making less than 950 U.S. dollars per month,

00:39account for around 10 percent of Taiwan's workforce. That's about 1.2 million people.
