Music and Dance Brings Life Back to Taiwan's Quake-Hit Taroko National Park

Taroko Gorge National Park in eastern Taiwan remains closed after a major earthquake in April this year rendered much of the area inaccessible. But a concert featuring Indigenous performers and the National Symphony Orchestra has helped to revive the spirits of locals.

00:00This is Chiroko National Park on Taiwan's east coast and for the last few months it

00:05has been eerily quiet. In April a 7.2 magnitude quake caused widespread landslides and rockfalls

00:12leaving most of this park inaccessible and wrecking the local tourism industry. But for

00:16today and at this part of the park at least, laughter, song, music and dance are back as

00:22the community holds a concert.

00:30Throughout the day local indigenous performers are being joined by some of Taiwan's biggest

00:42names including the National Symphony Orchestra. Clean up and reconstruction here is costing

00:48tens of millions of dollars and it's going to be up to seven years before the whole park

00:53can reopen. People here know there's a tough and long road ahead of them but they say that

00:59Chiroko's natural power is resilient and it will return to its original beauty.
