Choreographer Huang Yi Hits the U.S. With His Robot Dance Performance

Taiwanese choreographer Huang Yi is touring the U.S. with his long-running production "Huang Yi and Kuka" that combines music, dance and robotics. Huang says the work is more relevant than ever given the increasing presence of AI in our daily lives.

00:12It's an unsettling, futuristic work

00:14that combines modern dance with AI technology.

00:17Huang has been performing the piece for over a decade,

00:20but says audiences find it ever more relevant today.

00:23AI and robots are coming into our lives.

00:28So people are starting to pay attention to these works.

00:31The performance was staged

00:32at the California Institute of Technology,

00:35and some observed that the choreographer's

00:36Taiwanese roots could be felt

00:38in the challenge of programming the robot,

00:40showcasing the technological expertise

00:42that Taiwan is known for,

00:44while also showcasing the country's

00:45strong culture of creative art.

00:48This is an example of cultural diplomacy.

00:50It's an example to our local audiences

00:54that may not be familiar with

00:56how much creativity there is in Taiwan

00:59to get a taste of what kind of creative work is being done.

01:12you know, we kind of aiming to, you know,

01:16have interaction with the mainstream American culture.

01:21And I think this is a perfect opportunity.

01:23I think it can bring the people, Taiwanese people,

01:26American people, community together.

01:32Huang Yi is set to take his U.S. tour

01:34to North Carolina and Florida,

01:37bringing this unique feat of Taiwanese art and engineering

01:40to more audiences.
