Congratulations to Gemma Burdick who has won the Outstanding Contribution Award
00:08
awarded by the Scotsman Readers. What does it mean to you to win this award?
00:12
I'm just completely overwhelmed and I'm so... I work in a team which have always been really
00:17
passionate about working with addictions. It's a team which I think that we don't get
00:24
so much recognition so I think that this time I really just want to take it back to
00:30
Scottish Borders and just say that this is for us.
00:33
The one thing that on you, when you were nominated, it was talked about when you went into somebody's
00:39
home and helped them. Could you tell us about that incident?
00:43
So this individual we had been working with very closely, working at home, and he went
00:50
into hospital, which we got the ambulance to come and collect him. So we only worked
00:56
Monday to Friday and on the Monday, because this was the Friday he went into hospital,
01:03
on the Monday the first thing I done was went onto the hospital, like you can see who's
01:08
in the hospital, went in, he wasn't there. And I was like, right, why's he being discharged?
01:16
And I went and looked in, he wasn't there and I was like, look, I'm going to have to
01:22
go and check that he's okay. Went to his home, next thing, he didn't answer the door, couldn't
01:28
get through, could see his window was open, looked through the window and unfortunately
01:33
he was lying on the floor in disarray, like an absolute mess. And the next thing I knew
01:40
I was climbing through his window. We had Naloxone with us, I was with one of my support
01:45
workers and she was great as well. We work in a team, we have each other and we had to
01:55
climb through his window and I had to give him Naloxone. It was just amazing that he
02:01
forever thanks us and that was only six months ago and he is alive and he totally thanks
02:07
us all the time. So you're saving people's lives? 100% and that is ultimately the best
02:13
thing that I'll ever think about my job, is saving people's lives but not even saving
02:19
people's lives but just being there for people and trying my best. Well done, where are you
02:24
going to keep it? I don't know! I'm so pleased, this is unreal. I love it, congratulations.
02:31
Thank you so much. Well done. We're here with Aaron Smith, NHS Forth Valley winner of the
02:37
volunteer award. So congratulations. Thank you so much. Can you tell me what it means
02:43
to you to win the award? Yeah, it's fantastic. I'm a first responder with the Scottish Ambulance
02:47
Service in the NHS Forth Valley. I'm one of many hundreds that volunteer across Scotland
02:52
day in day out to help the Scottish Ambulance Service and help patients at their time of
02:56
need. It's a really unique type of volunteering and I would really encourage anyone that's
03:00
interested in healthcare to look at the Scottish Ambulance Service for any volunteering opportunities.
03:05
Excellent, so you've pretty much answered everything that I was going to say, so thank
03:08
you very much. Great, thanks so much. This is Alison Stevenson who's just won the Unsung Hero Award.
03:13
You work at Putlockery Community Hospital. Congratulations, what does it mean to you to
03:18
win this award? Well it's absolutely amazing. I didn't even know I was up for the award.
03:23
Did you not? I thought the emails were scammed. Oh really? I actually spoke to somebody else
03:29
and then obviously a couple of my colleagues had reported for us which is Karen and Debbie
03:35
who work in reception. Excellent. So I'm just amazed, absolutely amazed. And it's the
03:41
Unsung Hero Award. Do you think there are a lot of people in the NHS that are unsung? Yes, definitely.
03:48
The day I go above and beyond what I'm supposed to do, I just do what I think I want to do.
03:57
And I don't think I deserve an award for doing what I think is correct and
04:01
it's what I'm brought up to do, basically. Doing your job. So what do you do on a daily basis?
04:07
I'm actually the ward clerk. I help out in the ward. If the belt buzzes are going off, I jump in and help
04:14
the healthcare systems out. I help in reception. I basically help everywhere. That's why you've got
04:20
an award. Congratulations. Thank you very much. Thanks for talking to us. Well done.
