Americans in Taiwan Await U.S. Presidential Election Results

As polls close in the U.S. presidential election, Americans living in Taiwan eagerly await the results at a watch party in Taipei. It's a pivotal election that the whole world is watching.

00:00Democrats abroad are gathered here at this bar in Taipei, watching as the polls close

00:07in the U.S. and the votes start rolling in.

00:10The Americans I spoke with, from exchange students to long-time immigrants, said that

00:14they've all casted their vote from Taiwan, in hopes that their voices can be heard thousands

00:19of miles away from home.

00:21I personally don't have the anxiety that I did four years ago.

00:26I am quite confident that we are going to have a shutout, and I'm just happy to have

00:32my breakfast and enjoy the time with my fellow patriots.

00:37My hope is that we'll be a more unified country.

00:41My hope is that, of course, Kamala Harris wins.

00:45I think that a Trump presidency would be quite disastrous for the country.

00:50My hope is just generally that, honestly, no matter the outcome, I just hope that we're

00:58able to move on a path forward for all Americans.

01:02Now this event is for Democrats, but there are also a number of other election watch

01:06parties being held across Taipei today for Americans, regardless of their party affiliation.

01:12This is a pivotal election, and there are about three million Americans abroad eligible

01:17to vote, but only about three percent actually cast their vote.

01:21Now those voters here hope that they can make a difference and see those results soon.

01:25But with the race still too close to call, they'll likely be waiting a little longer

01:29before they find out who will be the next president of the United States.
