Stan Lee: Can You Imagine A World Without Spider-man

One year ago today we lost Marvel Comic's patriarch Stan Lee. To mark the occasion of his passing, here's a look back at the legacy of Spider-Man and what Stan went through to create this iconic superhero. #ThankYouStan #RIP

00:00And I said to him, I got this great idea, I want to call him Spider-Man, and he's a

00:08teenager.

00:09Dan, that is the worst idea I have ever heard, so he wouldn't let me do it.

00:13I really wanted to quit and try something else.

00:26Somebody opened the door, a model.

00:30And I took one look at her, and it was the face I had always been drawing.

00:34I couldn't believe it.

00:36I never did meet Betty.

00:37I mean, this was not Betty, her name was Joan.

00:40Who's the best looking man you've ever seen?

00:42Stan Lee.

00:43I just want to warm up with that.

00:46Of course, Stan Lee.

00:47The nicest man I've ever met.

00:53When I was young, I was almost embarrassed because I felt other men and women were building

01:02bridges and doing scientific research and things that mattered.

01:07And I'm writing these dopey little stories.

01:17And I said, gee, wouldn't it be cool if I had a hero who could stick to walls like an

01:23insect?

01:24What did I call him?

01:25Insect-Man?

01:26That didn't sound dramatic.

01:27Mosquito-Man?

01:28I went down the list, and when I got to Spider-Man, Spider-Man, oh, that sounded dramatic.

01:36He said, first of all, people hate spiders, you can't call a hero Spider-Man.

01:43Secondly, he said, he can't be a teenager, teenagers are only sidekicks.

01:49And finally, he can't have personal problems, don't you know what a superhero is?

01:59She gave me the world's greatest advice.

02:02She said, why don't you do one book the way you'd want to do it?

02:07The worst that'll happen, he'll fire you, but you want to quit anyway.

02:12At least you'll have gotten it out of your system.

02:19Because he was shy, he wasn't that successful with girls, he had to worry about his family.

02:26I think most teenagers reading it thought to themselves, hey, that could be me.

02:31You could be any kid.

02:34You could be black, you could be Asian, you could be Indian, you could be anything.

02:39And imagine you were in that costume.

02:51My wife and I are really so close, and yet I'm not sure if she's ever read a story I wrote.

02:59She's totally not into comics at all.

03:02She's the perfect wife for me.

03:10If not for Joanie, I'd be outside saying, hey, you got a nickel?

03:18I didn't realize the whole world was worried about whether I was in the hospital or not.

03:24It was fine.

03:25It made me feel good, refreshed.

03:28Now I'm home and looking for no trouble yet.

03:31You know, the usual.

03:33He was such a good friend to me, and I was such a big fan of his and his work, I'll never

03:38be forgotten.

03:39And every day when we make these films, there's a moment where everyone thinks about Stan.

03:43You know, just so full of life and just so kind and gregarious, and just made me feel

03:49right at home.

03:50It's just such a great character and story you created, and I'm just eternally grateful

04:11I remember Stan as a true gentleman who had this glint in his eye.

04:16He created a whole universe that changed the lives of many people, mine included.

04:22If there is something that you feel is good, something you want to do, something that means

04:32something to you, try to do it.

04:35Because I think you can only do your best work if you're doing what you want to do,

04:42and if you're doing it the way you think it should be done.
