Pro-EU incumbent Maia Sandu re-elected to second term as president of Moldova

Speaking at the headquarters of her Action and Solidarity party in the capital Chișinău, Sandu said her priority in the coming years would be to be a president for all Moldovans.

00:00Moldova's pro-western president Maya Sandu has won a second term in a pivotal presidential runoff on Sunday.

00:09Sandu took more than 55% of the vote in an election overshadowed by claims of interference.

00:44Sandu's challenger was the Russia-friendly former Prosecutor General Alexander Stoyanoglu,

00:49who finished well behind her with just under 45%.

00:53Moldovan police said on Sunday they had reasonable evidence of organized transportation of voters,

00:59illegal under the country's electoral code, to polling stations.

01:03And the foreign ministry said polling stations in Germany and the UK had been targeted by false bomb threats

01:09intended to stop the voting process.

01:12In the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moldova applied to join the European Union.

01:19It was granted candidate status in June of that year and in summer this year, Brussels agreed to start membership negotiations.

01:26The shift to the West annoyed Moscow, but it denies meddling in the election.
