Yilan Cleans Up After Kong-Rey Leaves Destruction in the Streets

Residents of Taiwan's northeastern Yilan County are cleaning up after Typhoon Kong-rey struck on Thursday. Heavy winds and rain uprooted trees and blew billboards away, leaving a path of destruction in the streets.

00:00Here in Ilan County, the government has ordered most people back to work and school today,

00:05but for many, their normal life is not back quite yet.

00:08For example, this family that usually sells bumper cars is instead spending their day

00:13cleaning up these fallen trees after Typhoon Kongrei.

00:17The storm brought over one meter of rainfall over the past 24 hours in this area and strong

00:22winds over 100 kilometers per hour, which caused major damage, especially to trees.

00:28Now this is an area that's been extensively hit by landslides caused by that heavy rain

00:33and it's also brought road closures.

00:35And now today, that's all starting to reopen.

00:38Residents told me that yesterday, the wind was especially strong in the afternoon that

00:42knocked down hundreds of trees in the area, which caused the most damage.

00:47Although the storm has passed, residents say that it'll take more than a day to recover

00:51from this after what they hope will be the last typhoon of the season.
