00:16
Korean troops are in Russia.

rising Russian aggression.

00:37
EU award for journalism.
00:46
Beirut faced a night of intense explosions as some 17 Israeli airstrikes hit Lebanon's
00:52
capital overnight.
00:54
At least one person was killed and several injured in a strike on a residential building
00:58
in the city's southern suburb of Dahiye.
01:01
In southern Lebanon, three soldiers of the Lebanese army were killed in an Israeli strike
01:06
on its troops.
01:07
Since the end of September, a total of 13 Lebanese soldiers have been killed.
01:12
The Lebanese army is not fighting the Israelis in their conflict with Hezbollah, but providing
01:16
support services for the civilian population.
01:20
Israel has also expanded its military campaign to the ancient city of Tyre after issuing
01:25
evacuation orders.
01:27
The evacuation area covered a densely populated stretch between two UNESCO World Heritage
01:32
sites.
01:34
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization postponed its last round of polio vaccinations in northern
01:40
Gaza because of intense bombardment.
01:45
Israel's ongoing siege of the area has displaced more than 60,000 Palestinians to central Gaza.
01:50
In the first public confirmation by the U.S., the Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on
02:04
Wednesday that there is evidence that North Korean troops are in Russia and it remains
02:09
to be seen what they would be doing there.
02:12
As we continue to look at this, there is evidence that there are DPRK troops in Russia.
02:22
What exactly they're doing, left to be seen.
02:25
These are things that we need to sort out.
02:27
We'll have more for you on that later.
02:30
Hours earlier, Ukraine's military intelligence chief, Kyrill Budanov, said that the first
02:34
North Korean units were expected to arrive to Russia's Kursk region on Wednesday, the
02:39
23rd of October.
02:41
They could supposedly help Russia resist Ukraine's incursion.
02:45
Early in October, Budanov said the total number of around 11,000 North Korean troops in Russia
02:52
will be ready to fight in Ukraine by the 1st of November.
02:56
He said that in return, Russia is helping North Korea evade sanctions and develop its
03:01
nuclear capabilities, including providing technologies for smaller tactical nuclear
03:06
weapons and submarine missile launch systems.
03:10
South Korea's spy chief stated that about 3,000 North Korean troops have been sent to
03:16
Russia and they're now receiving training on drones and other equipment before being
03:21
deployed to the battlefield in Ukraine.
03:24
About 10,000 North Korean troops are expected to arrive in December.
03:37
Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier that according to the military intelligence, some North Korean
03:41
officers are already in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
03:51
Poland's President Andrzej Duda arrived at South Korea's presidential office on Thursday
03:56
for a summit with President Jens Stoltenberg.
03:59
Their meeting takes place in a special context as North Korea has sent troops to Russia as
04:03
it wages war in Ukraine.
04:06
Polish and South Korean top security officials already met on Wednesday and agreed to expand
04:11
their nation's defense cooperation in response.
04:14
South Korea recently signed a deal to purchase so-called suicide drones from Poland to counter
04:19
North Korea's rising threats.
04:29
Defense ministers from Germany and the UK signed a pact on Wednesday to boost European
04:33
security amid rising Russian aggression.
04:37
Under the agreement, German submarine hunting planes will patrol the North Atlantic from
04:41
a base in Scotland.
04:42
UK Defense Secretary John Healey said the need for Europe to bolster its own security
04:47
and for the UK to play a bigger role in NATO are what drove the deal.
04:53
We share the same threats.
04:56
War in Ukraine, conflict in the Middle East, growing Russian aggression.
05:00
We share the same values, democracy, individual freedom, rule of law.
05:08
And in a more dangerous world, allies are our strategic strength and we must do more
05:14
together.
05:16
German defense giant Rheinmetall is set to open a factory producing artillery gun barrels
05:21
using British steel.
05:23
Britain and Germany are also expected to collaborate on developing new land-based and aerial drones,
05:28
as well as long-range strike weapons that can travel farther than the UK's existing
05:32
Storm Shadow missiles.
05:58
An
06:25
investigation into the disappearance of more than 50,000 child migrants has won the European
06:31
Parliament's 2024 Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism.
06:38
Lost in Europe, a project led by Dutch journalist Heysha Van Haren revealed that since 2021,
06:45
on average nearly 47 migrant children arriving in Europe have gone missing per day.
06:51
The research uncovered significant inconsistencies in documentation and reporting across 31 countries,
06:58
including Austria, Germany and Italy, raising concerns that the actual number of missing
07:03
children may be higher.
07:05
They say this is just a tip of the iceberg that there were 51,433 children missing.
07:16
The last time that we did this investigation, there were only 18,000 children missing back
07:23
in 2021.
07:24
So the number did increase.
07:27
We don't know what happens if we do the investigation again in three years.
07:32
The investigation found that many of these children fall victim to human trafficking
07:37
or get caught up in people smuggling gangs.
07:41
Many children are also caught at the borders and they end up in prison for people smuggling
07:47
whilst they were smuggled themselves.
07:50
So the EU war against people smuggling works out the other way for minor children.
07:58
A lot of minor children are in adult detention because of that.
08:04
The Lost in Europe team received their award at a ceremony in Strasbourg.
08:11
At least five people have been killed and around 20 injured in an apparent terrorist
08:16
attack in the Turkish capital of Ankara.
08:21
Assailants set off explosives and opened fire against the Turkish state-run aerospace and
08:25
defence company, according to Turkish President Erdogan.
08:31
Local media reported three assailants, including a woman, arriving at an entry to the complex
08:36
inside a taxi.
08:38
Authorities said two of the attackers had been neutralised and ambulance and firefighters
08:43
were dispatched to the site.
08:45
Helicopters were seen flying above the headquarters of Turkish Aerospace Industries as security
08:51
forces entered the site, according to local media.
08:56
Established in 1984, TAI is a leading aerospace company in Turkey that specialises in the
09:02
manufacture, design and modern development of integrated aerospace systems.
09:08
It was not clear who or what group may have been behind the attack.
09:17
Pensions has become a hot topic in Germany, with several political parties capitalising
09:21
on poverty amongst retirees.
09:24
We sat down with Berlin pensioner Anqi, who told us she receives 1,500 Euros net per month
09:30
after a 45-year career working as an elderly carer, to ask about the reality of pensions.
09:41
And what about the other pensioners at the care home Anqi worked at?
09:54
The pensioners at the care home Anqi worked at were often left behind by their relatives.
10:00
Many of them had very little.
10:02
They only had a little bit of basic pocket money per month.
10:06
They themselves were not well off.
10:08
In the past, many of them, especially the women, were at home.
10:12
They were dependent on their husband or took care of their children.
10:19
I think they are very left behind.
10:25
We spoke to the German pension system, who highlighted that pensions are tied to wage development
10:31
and said that pensions have increased by 4.5% this year.
10:35
They also recommended relying on other sources of income for retiring.
10:48
There is not only legal pension insurance, but many other sources of income.
10:52
For example, there are three pillars.
10:55
The large, supporting pillar is legal pension insurance.
10:58
But there is also private and operational pension insurance.
11:03
These can also be sources of income in old age.
11:06
There is also capital assets.
11:09
There is income from rental and mortgage.
11:12
There may be a partner who finances you.
11:15
So that when you look at your retirement income later,
11:19
you should always look at the household context
11:23
and not just look at the legal pension insurance.
11:26
Despite that, the pension system is a gift that allows seniors who have contributed to society for 45 years
11:32
to be given the opportunity to retire for another few decades in peace.
