00:00Well, Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly outlined incompatible war objectives over

00:06the last 12 months.

00:07The twin aims of destroying Hamas and freeing the captives in Gaza, incompatible.

00:12Going to war against Lebanon's Hezbollah and returning the residents of northern Israel

00:15to their homes, also incompatible.

00:18And then there's the really vague and scary stuff like changing the balance of power in

00:22the region.

00:23Sure, all of this is part of Netanyahu's survival strategy, but if you really listen to what

00:28Netanyahu and members of his government are saying, you'll get a much better sense of

00:32Israel's long-term ambitions.

00:48That's Netanyahu's finance minister, Bezalel Smatrich, and he's talking there about the

00:52creation of greater Israel.

00:54This concept involves the expansion of Israel's borders to include territory from Egypt to

00:59the Euphrates and, of course, everything in between, like Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and even

01:04parts of Saudi Arabia.

01:05There's an entire ideology built around this radical vision, which has its roots in a passage

01:11in the Old Testament promising this land to the Jewish people.

01:14But still, this is a vision that looms large over many segments of Israeli society.

01:24So, Israel's expansionist agenda and peace in the Middle East, incompatible.
