Good afternoon, I'm William Thio and I'm here for PTV News Now and right off the bat, we
00:10
kick off this afternoon's stories with the Philippine Army is in extended celebratory
00:16
mood and rightfully so.
00:18
One of its products, Major Florin P. Herrera over the weekend was bestowed the Alexander
00:24
R. Nininger Award for valor at arms.
00:27
Herrera, an international graduate of the U.S. Military Academy Class of 2013, was presented
00:34
the award by the West Point Association of Graduates at the Cadet Mess Hall of the Military
00:40
Academy in New York in recognition of his exceptional courage shown during the five-month
00:46
siege of Marawi City from May to October in 2017.
00:50
He is the first Filipino graduate of the renowned Military Academy to ever win such a prestigious
00:57
honor.
00:59
With a war in Gaza having spread to the north in Lebanon and perhaps even farther to the
01:04
east in Iran, and while Ukraine and Russia are nowhere near a deal on a truce, yet another
01:10
hot spot or flashpoint along the 38th parallel is sitting on a knife's edge, with escalating
01:17
tensions likely to boil over between North and South Korea.
01:22
And earlier today, South Korea confirmed a number of roads interconnecting both countries
01:27
have been blown up and completely destroyed by the North, as animosities between the two
01:33
escalate over North Korea's claim Seoul flew drones over its capital, Pyongyang.
01:39
For its part, Seoul or South Korea refused to confirm Pyongyang's drone accusations,
01:45
but instead warned it would harshly respond and punish its neighbor to the North once
01:50
the safety of South Korean citizens are put at risk.
01:54
Meanwhile, North Korean strongman and President for Life Kim Jong-un covened a top national
02:00
security huddle on Monday in which he directed a plan of immediate military action once the
02:05
order to respond or strike is given.
02:08
But South Korea is also talking and acting tough, especially with a solid backing of
02:14
allies behind like Japan and the United States, which is more nuclear-capable than Pyongyang
02:19
and Kim Jong-un could ever muster.
02:24
Columbus Day is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on the second Monday of
02:29
October.
02:30
In 2019, the progressive state of California opted to officially celebrate Indigenous Peoples'
02:36
Day in the place of the centuries-old tradition of commemorating Christopher Columbus on such
02:43
a day.
02:44
WHO's Jinya Doolot paid a visit to the Getty Museum where a couple of thousands gathered
02:50
to celebrate the auspicious occasion.
02:54
Andrea Jimenez, founder of Herb Club LA, leads a garden tour at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles
03:02
during a festival celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day.
03:06
She shows the visitors native plants to California, for example, yarrow, a flowering plant that
03:13
is known for its medicinal properties.
03:16
Native peoples would use it for healing wounds, for healing indigestion, for healing all sorts
03:25
of things.
03:26
And it has been known as one of those plants that is called a panacea.
03:30
The third annual celebration of Indigenous Peoples' Day at the Getty Museum drew about
03:36
2,000 people, making the event one of the biggest in Los Angeles, says festival founder
03:42
Chelsea Anderson.
03:43
So the mission of the family festival is to share resources of artists and makers from
03:50
Indigenous diaspora in Los Angeles.
03:52
We love the educational component of sharing traditions of the past, but also we really
03:57
celebrate contemporary voices and contemporary artists.
04:01
One of the artists, Shigo Belenetso, a dancer with the Wild Horse Native American Association,
04:08
says Indigenous Peoples' Day brings recognition to his people, who lived on the land before
04:13
Europeans came.
04:15
I remember growing up, some teachers, they didn't even know we exist.
04:22
Some people think we're extinct, and we're not.
04:24
We're here, we're alive, we're well, and we're thriving.
04:27
And we're passing this to our next generation, our singing, our dancing, our traditions.
04:34
The state of California does not observe Columbus Day, having replaced it with Indigenous Peoples'
04:40
Day in 2019.
04:42
Solange Aguilar, a Native American poet, says growing up it was a struggle celebrating Christopher
04:49
Columbus Day.
04:50
There's this story about him that he discovered America, but you can't really discover something
04:54
when there are already people there.
04:56
It's important to learn that history and understand that he was a really bad guy, he was awful,
05:00
and that history of him, that mythos or whatever, is a real thing, it's a real trauma that we carry.
05:06
Erica Baranwal, who moved last month to Los Angeles from Columbus, Ohio, is celebrating
05:13
Indigenous Peoples' Day with her family for the first time.
05:17
She believes recognizing Native peoples will make a better future for her mixed-race kids.
05:24
That's important to us, for our kids to be able to grow up without people making so many
05:29
assumptions about them based on the color of their hair, the color of their skin, their last name.
05:35
Columbus Day is currently a federal holiday in the U.S., unlike Indigenous Peoples' Day,
05:40
whose status varies state by state.
05:43
On Monday, New York City is holding one of the biggest Columbus Day parades in the country,
05:49
celebrating Italian-American heritage, culture, and achievements.
05:54
Jania Diulo, VOA News, Los Angeles.
06:00
And we've come to the end of our program.
06:03
Join us anew for the evening edition for the late-breaking stories at the hour.
06:08
Always stay connected by keeping it here for news you can count on.
06:12
