This is the tallest man-made arch in the world.
00:03
The key feature is that there is a cable car inside it that can go
00:07
directly to the observation deck, just like a closed Ferris wheel.
00:12
It is the St. Louis Arch, located in Missouri, USA, and it was built
00:17
in 1963.
00:20
The arch was built from both ends at the same time.
00:23
These triangular parts were installed from the bottom to the top, layer
00:27
by layer.
00:28
At first, they used a crane to mark the parts and poured concrete in
00:31
the middle of the parts to improve the rigidity of the arch.
00:35
At the same time, they installed a preload rod to support the legs and
00:40
keep them stable when bending inwards.
00:42
However, the height of the crane was only enough to build the lower six pieces.
00:47
For this reason, engineers installed track-crawling cranes on both sides
00:52
of the arch.
00:53
The cranes gradually increased with the height of the arch.
00:56
However, the arch, bent at a certain height, could not bear the weight,
01:01
so engineers installed a stable cross frame in the middle of the arch for
01:04
support, and then continued to build.
01:07
The entire construction process had to be very precise.
01:12
If there was a slight deviation, it would not be able to dock smoothly.
01:16
At the final docking ceremony, there were thousands of people watching, but
01:21
a new problem arose.
01:23
The gap of 2.5 meters should have been reserved for the last triangular piece.
01:28
Due to thermal expansion and contraction, only 0.6 meters was left.
01:34
For this reason, engineers continued to spray water on one side of the arch to
01:38
cool it down and use jacks to prop up enough space.
01:42
Only then could they successfully dock it.
01:45
Of course, the space inside the hollow arch is not wasted.
01:49
Inspired by the Ferris wheel, engineers installed eight cable cars on each side.
01:55
Each cable car can seat five people and go directly to the observation deck at
02:00
a height of 192 meters and 63 floors, which can accommodate 100 people.
