It's been reported that the average annual spend per person on takeaway food in the UK
00:07
increased from ÂŁ452 in 2019 to ÂŁ641 in 2021. It's thought that those under 25 are the
00:15
biggest takeaway fans, with the average person spending ÂŁ43 a week on takeaways.
00:20
With pizza and Chinese proving as the top most popular takeaways, Indian food, burgers
00:25
and fried chicken were then the following most popular takeaway choices for Brits.
00:29
But why is it that we continue to grow as a nation of takeaway lovers?
00:34
Well, according to research by Ninja, 38% of respondents revealed that some find cooking
00:40
too time-consuming, with more than a quarter revealing they lack the proper cooking skills
00:44
to cook themselves real meals. In a 2023 review conducted by Just Eat,
00:50
the online food order and delivery platform found that some of the platform's best sellers
00:55
last year included cans of Coca-Cola and sales of Ben & Jerry's cookie dough ice cream.
01:01
The study went on to report that the sale of prawn crackers alone grew by 999% in 2023
01:08
compared to 2022. The platform even revealed their top 10 dishes. Chips made the top spot,
01:13
followed by pilau rice, sausage rolls and curry sauce.
01:18
The Food Foundation has previously found that
01:21
the density of fast food outlets is greater in more deprived areas, almost twice as high
01:27
in the most deprived local authorities compared with the least deprived. Easier access to
01:32
neighbourhood takeaway outlets has been shown to increase consumption of takeaways and is
01:37
associated with higher weight. The current government has already confirmed that from
01:42
October 2025, a ban on junk food adverts being shown on TV before 9pm will come into force.
01:50
The government has said that this decision is aimed at tackling childhood obesity.
