00:30One winter evening, Henry's driver said,

00:41We'll be out early tomorrow. We've got to take the flying kipper.

00:45Don't tell Gordon, but I think if we pull the kipper nicely, Sir Topham Hatt will let us pull the express.

00:51The special coal they gave you is working very well.

00:54Hurrah! cried Henry. That would be lovely.

01:01All kinds of ships use the harbor at the big station by the sea.

01:05There are passenger ships, cargo ships, and fishing boats also come here.

01:10They unload their fish on the quay, some of it goes to shops in the town,

01:15and the rest in a special train to other places far away.

01:19This is the train the railway men call the Flying Kipper.

01:24Morning, all.

01:28Henry was ready at five o'clock. There was snow and frost.

01:32Men hustled and shouted, loading up the crates of fish.

01:36The last door banged, the guard showed his green lamp, the Flying Kipper was ready to go.

01:42Come on, Henry, old boy.

01:48Come on, come on, don't be silly, don't be silly, puffed Henry to the freight cars.

01:53The cars shuddered and groaned.

01:55Truck, check! Truck, check!

01:57All right, all right.

01:59That's better, that's better, puffed Henry.

02:04Clouds of smoke and steam poured from his funnel into the cold air,

02:17and the fire's light shone brightly.

02:19Hurry, hurry, hurry, panted Henry.

02:28They were going well.

02:30The light grew better, signal light shone green as they passed.

02:38Then, a yellow signal appeared ahead.

02:41His driver prepared to stop, but the home signal was down.

02:45All clear, Henry. Away we go.

02:51They couldn't know the switches from the main line to a siding were frozen,

02:55the home signal should have been set at danger, but snow had forced it down.

03:03A freight train was waiting in the siding to let the Flying Kipper pass,

03:07and the driver and fireman were drinking cocoa in the caboose.

03:11The Kipper is due, said the conductor.

03:14Who cares, said the fireman. This is good cocoa.

03:17The driver got up. Come on, fireman, back to our engine.

03:21They got out just in time.

03:25Oh dear, driver, look out!

03:27Whoa, watch out!

03:35Oh my!

03:37Henry's driver and fireman had jumped clear before the crash,

03:40but Henry lay dazed and surprised.

03:49Sir Topham Hatt came to see him.

03:51The signal was down, sir, said Henry.

03:55Cheer up, Henry. It wasn't your fault. Ice and snow caused the accident.

04:00I'm sending you to Crewe, a fine place for sick engines.

04:04They'll give you a new shape and a larger firebox.

04:07You'll feel a different engine, and you won't need special coal anymore.

04:11Won't that be nice?

04:13Yes, sir, said Henry, doubtfully.

04:18Henry liked being at Crewe, but was glad to come home.

04:31A crowd of people waited to see him arrive in his new shape.

04:35He looked so splendid and strong that they gave him three cheers.

04:39Beep, beep, he whistled.

04:41Thank you very much.

04:44I'm sorry to say that a lot of little children are often late for school

04:48because they wait to see Henry go by.

04:51They often see him pulling the express.

04:54He does it so well that Gordon is jealous.

04:59But that's another story.
