Typhoon Krathon Dissipates Over Taiwan

Typhoon Krathon has become just the second ever recorded typhoon to "die" over Taiwan. The storm made landfall at the southern port city of Kaohsiung, but quickly lost steam as it headed inland and came up against Taiwan's tall mountains.

00:00Rick Glauer has been following the storm all week and now he joins us from the capital Taipei.

00:06Rick, how's the weather looking now?

00:12Well, just a little bit of rain here in the center of Taiwan's capital Taipei.

00:17People in this shopping district of Zhongshan going about their everyday life.

00:22Schools and businesses reopened today.

00:25It's now been about 24 hours since Typhoon Kraton hit Taiwan in the southwest.

00:32But after it made landfall, it quickly weakened in strength and soon dissipated.

00:38Why? Well, that's because as the storm made landfall, it could no longer find fuel from the warm waters of the ocean.

00:48And Taiwan's high mountains took out the force of the winds.

00:53This is just the second recorded typhoon ever to die over Taiwan like this.

00:58And it's also the first typhoon in 47 years to make direct landfall on the city of Kaohsiung.

01:05A testament to this truly unusual trajectory of the storm.

01:10And while the storm may now be gone, it won't be forgotten.

01:14Many communities around the country still dealing with the disaster.
