You look incredible, thank you.
00:01
You're serving autumn.
00:02
Oh, yes, that was, those were the notes that I received today.
00:06
First of October, and then here we are.
00:08
I'm Jodie, we met months ago for Jurassic, when it was nicer weather,
00:12
and now here we are in October, and the autumn vibes.
00:14
Yes, yes, yes.
00:15
It's so lovely to see you.
00:16
Good to see you too.
00:17
How does it feel to be here at an event that's celebrating all things women?
00:21
Yeah, it's cool.
00:22
I mean, I love it.
00:23
It was really fun this morning.
00:24
We had a big, they called it a big family photo,
00:27
and it was all the women who were involved in Amazon MGM projects,
00:30
and, you know, there's just so many people that I either,
00:35
I know because I've worked with them and I love them,
00:38
I know because I admire them, and then, you know, there's some new faces as well,
00:42
and I'm just like, oh my God, what are you in?
00:44
I want to see it, I'm obsessed with you.
00:45
So, it was a great kind of chance this morning to see everyone,
00:50
and I instantly, when I walked in the room, I was like,
00:53
oh my gosh, I can totally tell that the majority of individuals in this room
00:57
are female-identifying because it just feels delightful,
01:03
unlike tea time, kind of.
01:05
Yes, yes.
01:06
It's like a vibe and atmosphere that just is unmatched.
01:08
You've just got to experience it.
01:09
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:10
And listen, so many people look up to you as well.
01:12
Like, how does it feel to be called a trailblazer?
01:15
Well, I mean, I don't look at myself in that way,
01:20
and in all sincerity, you know, there are many, many people
01:24
who are incredible trailblazers and whatnot,
01:26
but to get to be doing work in this industry is a huge honor and a privilege.
01:36
I'm over 20 years into my career, and to still get to be here is very cool.
01:44
I mean, I think what I would say is that the way I feel,
01:46
kind of looking out at all the incredible women that I'm getting to see,
01:50
you know, Amy Pascal, Octavia Spencer, like they're just, you know,
01:54
it's an extraordinary group.
01:57
Just, you know, I've always felt when being around women who are icons,
02:05
I've felt included.
02:08
They make space for others, and I know that's like a big generalization,
02:12
but I've literally never encountered a female in this industry
02:18
who hasn't been kind of like arms open.
02:22
And there's an idea that there's competition between folks in this business,
02:27
and particularly between women, and it couldn't be further from the truth, honestly.
02:33
My God, it's, I mean, the incredible peers and bosses and, you know,
02:40
community that I've gotten to be a part of as a woman in this industry is just,
02:45
it's a gift, and I'm very lucky.
02:47
I love to hear that, and you're also behind the camera as well.
02:50
How does it feel to be sort of in that space as well?
02:52
Because that's a space we need more women as well.
02:54
Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:55
Yeah, no, directing is something that's always been very, very, very important to me
03:00
and always kind of happened simultaneously along with my acting career.
03:03
And then the last several years, I've been very lucky
03:06
because directing on The Mandalorian has obviously been quite high profile.
03:11
Just a little.
03:12
It's really, it's really cool and really wonderful.
03:15
And what I would say is that for me, it's,
03:20
there are specific things that I'm fascinated by in filmmaking and storytelling,
03:24
and that's what I chase.
03:26
I think the idea of being like a woman in a space that, you know,
03:30
hasn't typically like included women necessarily, historically speaking.
03:38
That can get, that can kind of like mess up your thinking
03:42
and sort of get you into a place where you're like,
03:44
ah, I don't deserve to be here, or whatever it is.
03:47
Whereas if there's something, if there's a mission that you're on,
03:49
like for me, I specialize in emerging technology,
03:51
and I love performance, I love actors.
03:53
And so I'm always just seeking opportunities to be around incredible actors,
04:01
and to be around, you know, folks who are really kind of moving the needle
04:08
when it comes to, you know, the technological advancements that are possible in cinema.
04:13
So just focusing there, I get less fe-clumped about it all, you know.
04:19
Well on that note, who are some of the women that you've worked with
04:21
and maybe you want to work with that have inspired you in your career?
04:24
Yeah, my gosh, I mean there's so, so many incredible women.
04:28
Like Octavia Spencer was here today,
04:29
and I had the incredible honor of working with her in The Help,
04:32
and have worked with her actually many times since.
04:36
She's always been unbelievably supportive of all of her peers.
04:43
I've felt it acutely.
04:46
She's shown up for me, like when I've directed little things,
04:49
and, you know, like she won an Oscar and then did a tiny part in a Lifetime thing that I directed.
04:54
I was like, oh my God, Octavia, you are a saint.
04:58
So, you know, Viola Davis, kind of same thing.
05:00
These are, you know, women who I really, really, really look up to and admire.
05:07
Sigourney Weaver, who I got to work with on my first movie.
05:12
Hugely impactful, you know, great.
05:15
Sissy Spacek, great.
05:16
Just so I could go on and on and on, yeah.
05:20
Ellen Bernstein.
05:21
I know. I want to see The Junket, so you can tell me more later on.
05:24
Okay, great.
05:25
Thank you so much.
05:25
Excellent, thank you.
05:26
Lovely to see you again.
