Helping your child adjust to the school year

Some kids are still having difficulty adjusting to the new school year. Here is some advice from a mom and former schoolteacher to help ease the transition.

00:00Before becoming a wife and mother, I was a teacher.

00:06I know we have a lot of parents here within our Alatea family.

00:09Here are some things that I've seen firsthand from parents that have helped transition their

00:13student into the new school year.

00:15Number one is creating a calm routine for early bedtime and a slow, peaceful morning.

00:21I know that it is easier said than done, especially when you have littles, but it really does

00:26make a big impact on your student.

00:28Number two is leaving a piece of you with your kiddo throughout the day.

00:31Whether this is a little lunch in the notebox or a picture of the family, it could help

00:35your child feel like they're still connected to you.

00:37Number three, touch base with your kid and just communicate about how their day went.

00:41A lot of parents would debrief with their students about their school day during dinner

00:45time or on the drive home.

00:47I also had some students whose parents would ask them what they were looking forward to

00:50the most on the drive to school, and you never know what sort of things your kids might reveal

00:54to you.

00:55And number four, you yourself having a good relationship with your child's teacher.

00:59Being in communication with your kid's teacher just helps your child know that you really

01:04are a team with their teacher, you're both working for their best interests, working

01:07towards all their school goals, and it just makes them feel confident.
